G’day! My name is Hughie and I am a tour guide/director/surfing instructor with Dreaming Since and have been since 2017. My first (and probably my last job) was surf instructing and it is one of my favourite things to do. Over the years, on the side I have been promoting positive mental health around Australia through different projects such as my book “Pocket Smiles”. I like to combine the two to work with peoples strengths to produce the best results. It is my pride and joy being able to make people laugh and feel good about themselves, and I get to do that everyday in this line of work!
I am Australian, but I my childhood was spent in the U.S.A before returning as a teen where my surfing passion begun. Passion turned into obsession as I started to make plans in my later years of high school to devote my life to being in the ocean. Straight after I left school I started to teach surfing and started my own handmade surfboard label “Rocky Surfboards” out of a friends backyard, hence our slogan: “Backyard Handjobs”.
At the time I studied entrepreneurship and innovation at RMIT, and once I finished the opportunity to become director of Dreaming Since, a business I was already involved in, and loved presented itself. Here I am, years later in the water everyday, pursuing my passion and as happy as can be!
