Do you find surfing during winter daunting? Here's how to stay warm for your winter surfs...
🏄♂️ Right Equipment: a thick enough wetsuit booties, hood and gloves. Which items you wear will depend on how much you feel the cold and how long you plan on staying in the water for. For some of you a 4/3 with 3mm booties will keep you warm enough, where some people need a fleece lined warm 4/3, 5mm booties, a hood and gloves. As it starts getting colder and colder, you can start to add additional items when you feel you need to.
🏄♂️ Warm clothes for after your surf. Make sure you have a towel poncho to throw over and a warm jumper, jacket, socks and shoes. Ugg boots are a game changer for post surf footwear!
🏄♂️ Change Mat. Standing on and getting changed on an open weave mat or surf specific mat can do wonders for keeping you warmer. Keeping your feet off the cold ground will help you feel less of the cold.
🏄♂️ Warm water to shower under or pour down your wetsuit. This will help take the chill off and keep you warm enough to get changed. You can buy portable surf showers or fill up a drink bottle with warm water before you leave for your surf. Make sure the water isn't too hot and test it on the back of your hand/wrist before pouring down your wetsuit to ensure you don't burn yourself.
🏄♂️ A hot drink for after your surf. This one is a must have for warming your internal body temperature! You can prepare this in a hot flask before you head out for your surf and enjoy afterwards.
🏄♂️ Hot water bottle to pop on your lap when driving home. Again, this will help bring your body temperature back up quicker than without it. Simply pop it into your jumper or jacket and watch how quickly you feel warm.
🏄♂️ Changing into your wetsuit before you leave the house in the morning. A lot of body heat can be lost when getting changed in the car park pre-surf. This will also help keep you accountable and to ensure you actually get out there!
🏄♂️ If you're really struggling to warm up, a bath or submerging your hands/feet in warm water will go a long way and take away that bone chill.
