One of the world’s top wreck dives, with a little extra magic passing through.

The SS Yongala has spent more than 115 years transforming into one of the most extraordinary underwater ecosystems on the planet.

For divers, it’s the scale of life that sets Yongala apart. Giant Queensland groupers, sea turtles, eagle rays, sea snakes, schools of trevally, barracuda, bull rays and seasonal manta rays are all regular visitors to the wreck.

Part maritime history, part living reef, the SS Yongala offers a glimpse into both the past and the incredible biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef.

Some winter days are better spent in a snorkel mask 🏝️

Winter brings some of the best conditions to explore the fringing reefs around Townsville North Queensland, with calmer seas, clearer water and that soft tropical warmth North Queensland does so well.

Consider this your sign to take the scenic route up 🏝️

The Forts Walk earns its icon status for good reason. This 4km return trail takes you through granite boulders and eucalypt bushland, past remnants of Magnetic Island’s WWII history and up to sweeping Coral Sea views worth every step.

Look closely along the way and you might spot one of Maggie’s wild koalas tucked into the trees, because even the wildlife knows this track is prime real estate.

She’s from Texas, we can tell by the horns...🎶🐂🌵

It’s Texas Longhorn Tours season, which means it’s time to head west for big horns, red dirt, cowboy stories and a day out worth dusting off your boots for.

Cue the country playlist and road trip west. Just 90 minutes from Townsville, Leahton Park is home to Australia’s largest herd of purebred Texas Longhorns.

Expect safari-style tours, horse-drawn wagon rides, cowboy stories, the JR Gallery of Horns, old-school saddlery and a proper outback smoko with billy tea or campfire cowboy coffee.

It’s country charm, gold rush history and western vibes all rolled into one unexpected day trip.

Add it to your Visit Charters Towers, North Queensland drive itinerary and make a day of it.

Up for unexpected? Saddle up.

This World Ocean Day, celebrate somewhere that sees the ocean a little differently... 🌊

Out at John Brewer Reef, you'll find one of the most extraordinary experiences on the Great Barrier Reef. A museum beneath the surface, where underwater sculptures have become part of the marine environment they were created to celebrate.

The Museum of Underwater Art was designed by internationally acclaimed sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the Ocean Sentinels are inspired by real marine scientists, conservationists and ocean advocates whose work has helped protect and better understand the Great Barrier Reef.

For this year’s World Ocean Day celebrations, Jason deCaires Taylor returns to Townsville North Queensland, joining select tours to MOUA’s John Brewer Reef site and offering a rare chance to experience the underwater museum with the artist who created it.
