Absolutely stunning creation by Father Marker π₯π₯π₯
An awesome mural to celebrate nature and culture in the region ππ₯π₯π
He writes in Albury NSW:
"Standing 21 metres high and 3 metres wide on the exterior of the Volt Lane Car Park lift shaft, βResilienceβ is the tallest mural ever painted in Albury and my largest mural to date.
Commissioned by the Albury CBD Volunteer Committee in partnership with Murray Arts, the project was over a year in the making. Following a public expression of interest process, I was shortlisted and ultimately selected after presenting my concept to the panel.
Responding directly to the architecture of the building, the mural celebrates the regionβs unique ecology, cultural identity and history while paying tribute to bushfire recovery, the Wiradjuri people and threatened local species. The artwork takes the name βTree Goannaβ quite literally. Climbing the wall is a larger-than-life anamorphic lace monitor fused with a River Red Gum. Scales transition into bark, twisted branches form its tail, and the textures of tree and reptile merge into a single living entity. Nestled throughout composition are threatened species including the Grey-headed Flying Fox and Bogong Moth, creating a symbiotic ecosystem where all life depends on the tree for survival.
Sections of the lizard resemble charred timber still smouldering after bushfire, while others burst with fresh shoots and new growth. These contrasting elements speak to regeneration, resilience and renewal, reflecting both the recovery of the natural environment and the strength of communities rebuilding after devastation.Known as Gugaa to the Wiradjuri people, it holds important cultural significance as a totem representing strength, resilience and connection to Country. Ecologically, the species also faces increasing pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, making its presence in the mural a reminder of the importance of protecting environments.
I felt the story ended too abruptly at the base of the wall. With support from the project facilitators, the artwork was extended around the corner of the building, growing from 61mΒ² to 87mΒ². Inspired by Charmander from PokΓ©mon, the twisted branch tail finishes as a burning gum leaf, with a Bogong Moth drawn towards its light. "
