First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation launched its social enterprise, the Blak Markets in 2013, offering an authentic Aboriginal tourism experience to the Sydney market while supporting the traditional inter-generational passing down of knowledge by elders to young people in Aboriginal communities. The Blak Markets social enterprise has been developed by First Hand Solutions as an innovative

way to deal with some very real issues in Indigenous communities. "With the passing of elders, Aboriginal culture is vanishing at an alarming rate,” Peter Cooley, Director of First Hand Solutions said. “Knowledge, skills and experience accumulated over thousands of years is disappearing due to a breakdown in communication between generations. Aboriginal youth in turn, are becoming dispossessed from their cultural identity and confused about their position in society, leading to an array of social problems including one of the highest rates of suicide in the world for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander youth - who are also 19 times more likely to be detained in a juvenile facility.”

"This enterprise will not only reinvigorate the Aboriginal experience of a visit to La Perouse, but also the transfer of knowledge between the generations, using tourism as the tool," Peter said. Since its inception 8 years ago it has also acted as a micro-business incubator for Aboriginal people,

First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation is a registered charity supporting hands-on solutions to issues faced by Aboriginal peoples.

The Opening night program will feature performances by rising Darumbal and Tongan R&B vocalist Mi-Kaisha.

Mi-kaisha is a Sydney-raised vocalist, songwriter and producer whose sound blends R&B, soul and pop with layered harmonies, shaped by the local music scene she grew up in and the influence of her father’s Koori Radio hip-hop show, “Island Hopping.” She describes herself as a “city girl” with a “sweet and deadly” duality, reflecting both softness and strength in her music and identity.

Her work is marked by versatility and emotional range, with a “chameleon” voice that moves between delicate and powerful tones. While her music often feels accessible and melodic on the surface, she describes her existence as deeply political, using her platform to advocate for Pacific Islander and First Nations communities and to challenge systemic oppression. Much of her early performance experience came through Aboriginal community events, shaped by strong women who influenced her identity and resilience.

Mi-kaisha currently divides her time between Sydney and New York City, where she is completing studies at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. She has released her single “Seen” and continues to develop new music while building an international career grounded in storytelling and cultural connection.

The Opening night program will feature performance by Djinama Yilaga Choir -an intergenerational Yuin choir revitalising and renewing the Dhurga language of the South Coast region of NSW. From performances at Vivid Sydney, Parliament House, and international festivals, to commissions for the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, their journey is one of celebration and resilience.

Only a generation ago, speaking the Dhurga language was a punishable offence. Under government policies, teaching Dhurga to our children could result in them being taken away from their families.
