✈️ Traveling to the UK including Northern Ireland – From 25 Feb 2026
Recent UK entry requirements have caused confusion and uncertainty for many dual Australian / British/Irish citizens. So, if you are travelling to the United Kingdom including Northern Ireland, please be aware of the following important updates regarding entry requirements.
If you were born in Australia but have a British or Irish parent — or if you once held a UK or Irish passport — you may now be required to travel on a UK or Irish passport, not an ETA.
If you are unsure whether you need a UK passport or an ETA, you are not alone. Here is some information that might help:
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) (For Australian Passport Holders)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
• An ETA is now required for Australians (and certain other nationalities) to enter the UK.
• Cost: £16
• Validity: 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first
• Usage: Multiple visits, up to 6 months each
• Purpose: Tourism, business, visiting family/friends, short-term study, or transit
• How to apply: Via the UK ETA app. Most applications are processed within 3 working days, though some may take longer.
The ETA system helps make travel easier while strengthening UK border security.

Major Rule Change – Dual Citizens (Effective 25 February 2026)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
• Who it affects: Australian-British or Australian-Irish dual citizens
• Requirement: Must enter the UK using:
- A British passport, or
- An Irish passport, or
- A Certificate of Entitlement in another valid passport
• Important: Dual citizens cannot use an ETA
• Apply early – processing can take over 12 weeks
• Entry may be refused without one of these documents
Check Your Status – You May Already Be a Dual Citizen
------------------------------------------------------------
You could automatically hold British citizenship if you:
• Were born in the UK or Ireland, or
• Have a parent with British or Irish citizenship
💡 Tip: Many travellers don’t realize they are dual citizens. Check your status before booking travel to avoid delays. https://www.gov.uk/check-british-citizenship
