Are you passionate about your town’s history and keen to share it with a wider audience?

Join our upcoming webinar, Hands-on-History: How to Bring Your Local History to Life, created especially for people who work or volunteer with regional historical societies and heritage organisations.

When visitors experience history in the places where it happened, hear stories from knowledgeable local people and gain special access to records, collections and landmarks, the past becomes personal.

In this practical webinar, we’ll explore how heritage groups can tap into tourism:
• bring local stories, collections and historic places to life
• create engaging and memorable visitor experiences
• reach new audiences
• strengthen connections across the community
• generate compelling new reasons to visit regional communities

You’ll also discover how a Hands-on-History event can turn your organisation’s local knowledge and expertise into an accessible experience that benefits visitors, heritage groups and the wider community.

Done and dusted - and what an experience it was!
Our first Hands-on-History Experience brought the extraordinary story of the Tichborne Claimant to life across Wagga Wagga.
Participants examined the evidence, met local experts and enjoyed special access to archives, collections and historic places around the city. It was wonderful to see people doing more than simply listening to history - they were moving through it, asking questions and discovering the story for themselves.
In our first blog for a while, I share what we learned from the experience, why five old suitcases sparked my own family history journey and what comes next for Family History Holidays.
When history steps out of the archive and into the places where it happened, the past becomes personal.

More snaps from last month in Wagga at our very first Hands-on History Experiences event 👀

And there's more to come around Wagga and the Riverina very soon, then further afield in 2027. Who's keen? Tell us what towns you'd love to explore!

Take a look at our very first Hands-on History Experiences event 👀

Held in Wagga just a couple of weeks back, Friday's workshop brought members of local heritage groups and museums together, and Saturday's Discovery Day took a small group deep into the Tichborne Claimant story with Brad Argent bringing it all to life and a full afternoon of tours across Wagga, from the archives to the cemetery to the RAAF museum.

Two very different days with the same intriguing story at the centre of it.

Huge thanks to Brad, to every local guide and historian who got involved, to the Museum of the Riverina and to everyone who came along for either day. Wagga, you did us proud!

This is just the beginning, too. More Hands-on History Experiences are coming to Wagga and the Riverina, announcements coming soon. And from 2027, we'll be heading further afield.

Ever visited the RAAF Base Wagga Heritage Centre (or said out loud you'd love to when you're driving past)?

A guided tour is one of four afternoon experiences you can choose from at our Discovery Day this Saturday. You'll see the historic aircraft out front, wartime memorabilia and get a look at the Base's long connection to the Riverina region.

The other options are just as good and include a heritage walk around old Wagga, a tour of the Riverina Archives at CSU and a walk through Wagga Wagga’s historic Monumental Cemetery with Zajkel from Free Roam Theatre, sharing stories unearthed in collaboration with the Wagga Wagga & District Historical Society Inc.

Do you know the story of the Tichbourne trial? In 1865, a man turned up in Wagga Wagga claiming to be a missing English baronet who'd been presumed dead for years. He could barely remember basic facts about his supposed noble family. And for a while, some of them believed him anyway.

The Tichborne Claimant case became one of the longest, most expensive legal trials in British history. And it started right here in the Riverina.

This Saturday (13 June), family historian Brad Argent will walk a small group of guests through the full story with records and evidence and what Wagga's archives actually reveal. It's a private event for people who want to go deeper into the Riverina's history and limited to 20 spots.

If you're not a Wagga local, you can also include two nights’ accommodation at The Houston in your ticket.

If you've got roots in the region, or you're just the kind of person who finds this stuff fascinating, join us.

One of the highlights of our upcoming Hands-on History weekend is the rare opportunity to step behind the scenes of some of Wagga Wagga's most fascinating historic buildings.
Imagine taking a seat before the bench in the Historic Council Chambers, staying in the beautifully restored the Houston Boutique Hotel, and unwinding at the end of the day in the private lounge of The Riverine Club
For generations, Wagga locals have gathered in these remarkable places. They've witnessed important decisions, celebrations, community events and countless stories that have helped shape the Riverina region.

A quick quiz for the local history lovers:
🏛 Which of these three buildings was around when the con artist Tom Castro was plotting to become a British aristocrat and claim the Tichborne fortune?
Share your guess in the comments!

If you're a local looking for a staycation (tickets include 2nights at The Houston) and a chance to experience local history from the inside, we're able to offer a 20% discount.
