Tasmanians are in for a cold and unsettled week as a strong cold front pushes across the state from Wednesday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the front will bring showers, snow to low levels, possible hail and fresh gusty winds through to the end of the week.

Snow could fall to about 500 metres in the south and west on Wednesday night, then drop to around 300 metres in the south-west on Thursday morning.

A strong west to south-westerly wind will follow the front on Thursday, with possible small hail about the west and south and patchy morning frost in the north-east.

Hobart will feel the change on Thursday, with the temperature reaching nine degrees and a very high chance of showers and possible small hail.

Conditions should ease slightly on Friday, but showers are expected to linger across much of the state.
