The Lost Arts Society - School of Tap Dance

The Lost Arts Society - School of Tap Dance My name is Fiona & the Lost Arts Society School of Dance is my studio. The Lost Arts has classes in Ballet & Tap, specifically for adults.

My aim is to bring dance to those that have never had the chance but always wanted to & those coming back to dance My name is Fiona and Lost Arts Society School of Dance is my studio. The Lost Arts Society is an adult specific dance school with classes in Ballet and Tap. My aim is to bring dance into the lives of those that have never had the chance but always wanted to. I grew up dancing, my adop

tive mother was a dancing teacher and I was regularly told stories of being in a baby pen while she taught and bouncing along with the music until I would fall asleep. I started dancing at two years of age and started student teaching at ten. I did 2 yrs full time ballet with Valrene Tweedie. Miss Tweedie was a Principal Ballerina with the Borovansky Ballet Company. In my time studying with Miss Tweedie I learnt the important lesson of focus and dedication in achieving results. I have an Advanced Certificate in Cecchetti Ballet and a Teachers Certificate in Tap. Just over 20years ago, I was also hit by a car and had to learn to walk again. This brings me to the essence of what the Lost Arts is about and why it’s an adult specific Dance School. I truly understand the adage ‘if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it’. I have numerous long term injuries that I now need to manage. If I was to stop moving and dancing I would seize up . Movement and dance brings strength into our lives as we age. It gives an awareness of how we move in the world that extends beyond the dance class. It is also an incredible amount of fun with students making new friendships and forming a dance community, that exists beyond the studio. CLASSES

Ballet – This is a 45mins class focused on strength gained through ballet with a small centre practice. There is something very healing and special about doing ballet and for me, it is a personally very happy place. Tap – There is a truth, that you can’t help but smile when you tap dance. It lightens the world through percussion riffs. I believe in the history of tap as a subversive act and my tap ethics mimic this. I revere Honi Coles , Gregory Hines and Savion Glover; proponents of tap as a form of ‘kissing the floor’. This is tap that has far more a chance of being conducted to Tom Waits than a Hollywood show tune.

During the filming of *West Side Story* in New York City in 1961, dancers could often be seen warming up between takes, preparing their bodies for the demanding choreography that defined the film. The energy in these moments was a mix of focus and camaraderie, as the performers stretched, practiced steps, and mentally rehearsed scenes that would soon become iconic. The streets and studio sets buzzed with anticipation, the cast ready to bring the story’s intense emotion and dynamic movement to life.

The dance routines in *West Side Story* were groundbreaking, blending classical ballet techniques with the raw, urban style of street dance to reflect the tensions and passions of the rival gangs at the heart of the narrative. Warming up was not just a physical necessity but a way for the dancers to connect with the rhythm and spirit of the story, channeling their energy into powerful performances. The choreography, led by Jerome Robbins, demanded precision and stamina, making these preparatory moments crucial to the film’s success.

These glimpses of dancers warming up offer a behind-the-scenes look at the dedication and artistry that fueled *West Side Story*. Beyond the glamour of the final product, they remind us of the hard work and discipline required to transform a challenging and socially charged narrative into a timeless cinematic masterpiece.
