To be honest, that number is a bit hard to wrap our heads around.

When we started sharing photos and videos from out on the water, it was really about showing people what we’re lucky enough to have right here in our own backyard. The dolphins, the harbour, the giant cuttlefish each winter, and the exciting moments out in the Spencer Gulf that most people never get to see.

We’re big believers in getting people to visit Whyalla and experience it for themselves. Social media has been one of the biggest ways we’ve been able to spread the word about the incredible marine life we have here.

But more than the numbers, it’s the people behind them that matter.

Thank you for every like, share, save, message and especially the comments. We genuinely love hearing your stories, questions and seeing your excitement about what’s happening out on the water.

You guys are gold.

Whether you’ve joined us on the Freedom Explorer, shared one of our posts, told a mate about Whyalla, or just enjoy following along, thank you for being part of this community.

Matt and I are looking forward to seeing you on one of our cuttlefish tours.

Here’s to sharing more of the Spencer Gulf with you all.

Update:
Today Friday May 22nd, we ventured out to Point Lowly - Cuttle Cove to check out if any Giant Cuttlefish arrived yet.

After a couple hours of scanning, we found 2 cuttlefish. One female was out to display, and a large male hiding with her under a rocky ledge.

Whilst numbers are still low with their arrivals, we will continue tours from the Whyalla Marina for this week ahead.

We have also started seeing some cuttlefish from Whyalla, that makes this tour a great chance to see the early arrivals, and still see all the fish feeding - that are in HUGE numbers.

To add with that, seals arriving, dolphins, ships and tugs, local scoop on Whyalla, that makes a tour unforgettable, and full of joy!

If you’re wanting to book a seat this week, simply book via link in comments. Happy days ahead, skipper Steve.

Sponsorship Opportunity 🙏🏎️

If you can help in any way, we are on a quest and I’m pushing hard to help these kids do something no other school has done before. Their race times would have placed in the last world championships. These kids are on a quest, and it time for Whyalla to get behind them.👇

Whyalla students race hydrogen cars at the World Finals in Switzerland 2026

Five students from Whyalla, South Australia have done something extraordinary. Out of hundreds of teams across Australia, they qualified for the H2 Grand Prix World Finals 2026 - an international competition where teams design, build, and race 1:10 scale remote-control cars powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells.

The World Finals are held in Switzerland from 28 June to 6 July 2026, and these students will be there representing Australia - and carrying Whyalla's name to the world stage.

Who are they?
They're secondary students from Sunrise Christian School and Samaritan College - two Whyalla schools that joined forces to compete in the H2 Grand Prix Pro, a STEM education program run by Horizon Educational. The competition teaches students real engineering and energy technology skills: they work with hydrogen fuel cells, electronics, aerodynamics, and race strategy - the same principles shaping the future of clean energy.

They've already competed locally, proved themselves with a dominant performance, and earned their place. Now they need the community behind them to get there.

Why does this matter?
Whyalla is a city whose future is deeply tied to the question of clean energy.

These students aren't just racing toy cars - they are hands-on pioneers of the very technology that could define the region's next chapter. At a time when Whyalla's place in Australia's hydrogen story is being written, these five young people are already living it.

The H2 Grand Prix World Finals are also live-streamed globally. When these students race in Switzerland, Whyalla goes with them.

What does the money cover?
Return flights - 5 students + 5 adults
Accommodation in Switzerland (9 nights)
Equipment, parts & competition entry
Travel insurance, visas & transfers

Every single dollar goes directly toward getting these students to Switzerland and giving them the best possible shot at the podium. This trip cannot happen without community support - there is no school fund or government grant covering this.

How you can help
Any amount makes a real difference. Share this page with your networks, post it in community groups, and spread the word. If you are a business or organisation interested in becoming a named sponsor, please reach out via our page: Whyalla H2 GP RC Cars - we'd love to talk about what recognition we can offer you.

Thank you for believing in Whyalla's young innovators. Let's get them to Switzerland. 🇦🇺

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR WHYALLA
Hydrogen technology is no abstract concept for Whyalla - it sits at the centre of the city's economic debate. These students have spent months engineering and racing cars powered by the same fuel cell technology that is central to proposals for Whyalla's industrial future. At a moment when the community is grappling with questions about clean energy and the steelworks, these teenagers are not waiting - they are already doing it.
The team represents a cross-school collaboration, with students from two different Whyalla high schools working together to achieve a national qualification. It is a story of local ingenuity, STEM education, and regional ambition.
