Welcome to J Ward Lunatic Asylum in Ararat, Victoria—arguably the most intensely haunted bluestone building in Australia. Before it became an asylum for the criminally insane, it started in 1859 as a goldfields prison. Three men were hanged here, and their bodies? Still buried right on the grounds in unmarked graves. 🪦

When the prison closed, it was transformed into a maximum-security ward for patients who were deemed too dangerous for regular asylums. Infamous names like Chopper Read, Gary Webb, and William Wallace once paced these very floors.

🧠 FUN FACT: J Ward operated for over a century with an incredibly high level of lockdown, but it wasn't just the inmates who never left. Visitors and paranormal investigators frequently report hearing the heavy boot-steps of former governors walking the West Wing, sudden temperature drops in the original kitchen, and disembodied whispers in the old shower blocks.
