Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences

Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences Half day and full day tours plus three day immersion camps are offered. Our culture is a living culture. Come with us to hear the little lore stories.

Located 1 hr 40 mins from Sydney and 1 hour from Newcastle, you can experience the Aboriginal Culture and little lore stories of Yengo Country with Aunty Leanne King. These are the very beginning stories of our Ngurrumpa (our camp world) as given to us by our Elders. Far from being 'myth' these stories teach us how we should be and relate to all things around us. Wollombi has been, for millennia,

an important meeting place, to which Aboriginal people would travel great distances for trade, social in*******se, and ceremony. The focus of these ceremonial gatherings was, and still is, Mount Yengo, every bit as sacred to the peoples of the East as Uluru to those of the Centre. From Yengo's summit Baiame, one of the primary creative forces, stepped back into the skyworld after life had been created and the Lore set in place. To ensure that this Lore would not be forgotten, Baiame's final act was to carve it in stone. We would like to share some of the story of these engraving sites with you.

TRADITIONAL OWNERS STOP BILLIONAIRE'S PROJECT TO HARM A SACRED RIVER

Traditional Owners in the Pilbara have won against the company owned by West Australian billionaires Andrew and Nicola Forrest.

The Forrests cattle business lodged an application to build two granite quarries and 10 weirs along the Minduruu (Ashburton) River.

The Minduruu River is a registered Aboriginal Heritage Site sacred to the Thalanyji people.

In Thalanyji's belief, it is where the water serpent Warnamankura lives, who protects the country.

The State Administrative Tribunal of WA handed down its determination on Thursday, refusing an appeal by the Forrests and Forrest Pty Ltd of the controversial Section 18 provision of the Aboriginal Heritage Act.

The Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) are the native title holders of the land and participated heavily in the tribunal hearings.

“The Thalanyji people believe that human interference with the natural order of the river will have harmful spiritual effects upon Thalanyji country and Thalanyji people,” a BTAC spokesperson said.
