Take the road less travelled and uncover the stories of Tambellup.

The Tambellup Heritage Trail is a series of three interconnecting trails that weave through the townsite, river reserve and surrounding landscape, sharing stories of both Noongar culture and early European settlement.

Begin with the Town Trail, a gentle 600m self-guided loop through the heart of town, featuring information boards and plaques along the way. Continue north to the River Trail, where stories unfold beside the Gordon River and traces of the town’s settler history remain. Or follow the Noongar Trail south of town, where the landscape reveals the deep cultural connection between people and place along the river and former Aboriginal Reserve.

Brochures are available from the CRC and Shire Office.

Where wide skies meet quiet landscapes, Cranbrook invites you to slow down and immerse yourself in nature.

Think pink salt lakes, sweeping lookouts, rich birdlife and seasonal wildflowers all set against the striking backdrop of the Stirling Range.

Cranbrook’s Pink Lake forms part of a chain of salt lakes tracing an ancient waterway. Please note this lake sits on private land, but the surrounding landscape offers a glimpse into the region’s unique natural systems.

For panoramic views, head to Sukey Hill Lookout, located 5km east of town off Salt River Road. From here, take in uninterrupted views of the Stirling Range. In spring, the area comes alive with wildflowers.

If you’re keen to explore further, the wildflower walk along Salt River Road offers a gentle 1.7km loop, with interpretive signage highlighting native flora, including a variety of striking orchids in season.

It’s these quiet, nature-filled moments that make Cranbrook so special.

Take the road less travelled… and discover it for yourself.

There’s something about getting out of range, away from the noise, and onto a long, quiet road.

Our nature and adventure journey through the Great Southern Treasures isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about slowing down. Waking up by a lake. Taking the long way. Sitting a little longer at a lookout. Letting the day unfold without a plan.

From the still waters of Lake Ewlyamartup to the vast presence of the Stirling Range, through bushland at Lake Poorrarecup and all the way to the quiet of the Frankland River, this is a reminder of how much space there is when you step off the highway.

Not every trip needs to be busy. Some are better when they’re quiet. Are you ready to take the road less travelled?

Step into a landscape shaped by stories of resilience, exploration and a deep connection to Country.

In Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup, history isn’t confined to a museum, it’s woven through the land.

Begin at the Holland Track, one of Western Australia’s most iconic inland routes. Just off Latham Street, you can walk a section of the original trail once used by prospectors heading to the goldfields. For those drawn to adventure, the full journey stretches more than 600km to Coolgardie accessible by 4WD along the original track or via the Holland Way on gravel roads. (It’s always worth checking local conditions before setting off.)

For a different kind of discovery, follow the West Broomehill Postie Run Geocache Trail. This self-guided journey connects 23 locations, tracing a historic mail route that has served the region for over a century. Along the way, uncover stories of early settlers and the farming communities that shaped this landscape.

If you’re drawn to stories like these, you’ll find them woven throughout our latest Nature & Adventure itinerary, designed to help you explore a little deeper and take the road less travelled.

Head to our website to start planning your journey.

📍 Wadjekanup Bridge: One of the 23 geocache locations and one of Western Australia’s oldest surviving bridges, leading to Hayfield Reserve. The nearby pool holds cultural significance as a historic Aboriginal ceremonial site.

There’s a different kind of freedom that comes with travelling on two wheels.

The Wild Gravel Trail invites you to slow down, ride further and experience the Great Southern Treasures at your own pace. Inspired by Wild Gravel Cycling & Running Event, this long-distance cycling route winds through some of the region’s most striking and unexpected landscapes.

Follow quiet gravel roads past historic railway towns, across open farmland and towards the dramatic peaks of Koi Kyeunu-ruff / the Stirling Range, with native birdlife and big skies never far from view.

Spanning eight towns, the trail is designed for flexibility, where you can ride it end to end over a few days with friends, or take it one section at a time. With food, accommodation and welcoming communities along the way, it’s as much about the journey as it is the destination.

Take the road less travelled… and see where the trail leads.

Head to the Trails WA website to plan your wild adventure.

Feel like getting out into nature and seeing your own backyard a little differently?

Start in Katanning, where quiet lakes and hidden bushland trails invite you to slow down and explore.

Set up camp at Lake Ewlyamartup, a peaceful 100-hectare recreation lake just 17km east of town. With water for most of the year and over 95 species of birdlife, it’s a place to kayak, picnic or simply sit by the water as the day unfolds. Facilities include picnic areas, BBQs, toilets and a boat ramp. (Please note: no bins are provided, so take your rubbish with you.)

A short drive away, discover Twonkwillingup – Police Pools, a tranquil bushland oasis just 4km from Katanning. Wander the walking trail, follow the boardwalk and keep an eye out for native wildlife. This site has long been an important meeting place and water source for Noongar people, with layers of history that continue to shape its story.

It’s these quieter moments, the ones found just off the main road, that make exploring this region so rewarding.
