The Shire of Cranbrook is a place where history, agriculture and natural beauty come together in the heart of the Great Southern. Located three hours southeast of Perth and just over an hour north of Albany, the Shire spans Cranbrook, Frankland River and Tenterden.

Cranbrook came to life with the construction of the Great Southern Railway in the late 1800s. In 1899, the town was officially gazetted, named after the birthplace of railway engineer JA Wright. Today, Cranbrook is known as the "Gateway to the Stirling Range," with the awe-inspiring national park right on its doorstep.

Tenterden’s story dates back to the 1860s, when pastoralists first grazed sheep near Round Swamp. The townsite developed along the railway line, and by 1893, it was renamed after a town near Wright’s hometown in England.

Frankland River, one of the five Great Southern Wine Region sub-regions, was first settled in 1857 and has grown from rich farming country into one of Western Australia's premier wine regions.

Beyond the fields and vineyards, the Shire is home to rare wildflowers, shimmering pink lakes, and the rugged beauty of the Stirling Range.

The Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup is rich in history and culture. Located 302km south-east of Perth along the Great Southern Highway, Broomehill is the northern gateway to the Shire, with Tambellup just 23km further south.

The region thrives on agriculture, with cropping and grazing forming the backbone of the local economy. But beyond the paddocks and pastures, you’ll find stories of resilience and heritage that span generations.

Broomehill was born with the arrival of the Great Southern Railway in 1889, which drew settlers away from the once-thriving town of Eticup. Today, you can visit the original site of Eticup and imagine the bustling town that once stood there.

Tambellup also traces its roots to the railway era. The townsite was declared in 1899 following the arrival of settlers like Josiah Norrish, who began as a sandalwood cutter and went on to become a prominent sheep breeder in the region.

As you drive into Tambellup, you’ll be greeted by the town’s beloved ‘Big W***y’ sculptures, handcrafted from local timber and inspired by the cheeky and ever-present W***y Wagtail. More than just a regional mascot, the wagtail holds cultural significance in Noongar traditions as a mischievous, spirited bird. The Noongar people have strong ties to this area, especially around the Gordon River, where many culturally significant sites remain.

Just 2.5 hours from Perth, The Shire of Woodanilling is a quiet country town with a rich past and a close connection to nature. Gazetted in 1892 near a waterhole called Round Pool, the town’s name comes from the Noongar word meaning “place of little fishes.”

Early settlers came in search of grazing land, followed by sandalwood cutters who shaped the region’s early economy. By the early 1900s, Woodanilling was a thriving hub with 800 residents and a bustling railway station transporting everything from wool and grain to sandalwood and mallet bark.

Today, the town offers a slower pace of life. With lakes, bushland and wide open skies, it’s a hidden gem for nature lovers, families and caravan and camping enthusiasts.

✨ Birdwatch and picnic at Queerearrup Lake, wander through Martup Pool or Wingedyne Nature Reserve, or take in panoramic views from King Rock. Centenary Park is perfect for BBQs, skate sessions and letting the kids explore.

Located just north of the Stirling Ranges, Cranbrook’s Pink Lake is part of an ancient chain of salt lakes that follow the path of an old waterway. Its vibrant hue and salty waters offer a striking contrast to the nearby wetlands like Lake Nunijup and Lake Poorrarecup.

You’ll spot this natural wonder right from the Great Southern Highway, about 15km east of Cranbrook’s town centre, just before Pootenup Road. Please note the lake is on private land, so view and photograph it from the roadside as you journey through this stunning part of the region.
