🌿 Celebrate this National Science Week at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre!

🔍Join University of Queensland PhD researcher Kath McLay for a fascinating presentation exploring the remarkable plant life of Karawatha Forest.

🌲 Home to over 320 plant species, the forest contains some of Brisbane's last remaining wet heathlands and melaleuca wetlands.

Discover how native plants survive heat, drought and nutrient-poor soils, and learn about the hidden genetic adaptations that help them thrive. Kath will also share how this research is supporting biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in Australia.

🌱♻️Turning Trash into Treasure ♻️🌱

KFDC’s Community Composting Hub is cooking up nutrient-rich soil… but we need your help!

We’re looking for:
🥚 Empty egg cartons (cardboard ones please!)
🪴 Empty gardening soil/ mulch bags (any size please!)

These everyday items are ⭐️gold⭐️ for us!
🧑‍🍳 Egg cartons are used in the compost as carbon.
📦 Mulch bags are used for bagging the finished compost for you to use.

So if you’ve got some lying around, don’t throw them out! Bring them to us and turn your (would be) rubbish into a valuable resource 🌿♻️

📍 Drop off point: Place empty egg cartons and mulch bags inside the compost resting bay (pictured)
🕐 When: any day of the week, any time before 6pm

With your efforts, we can keep waste out of landfill and turn it into precious compost!! 🙌 🪴

Karawatha Forest Discovery Walk 🌳

We had a great walk along the Rocks Track with a lovely group!

🪾 Have you seen the funny little lines on some eucalyptus trees?
They’re made by a lavae (a baby moth) that lives under the bark. 🐛As the grub grows, it makes thicker and thicker tracks. Eventually, it turns into a moth, flies away, and lays eggs somewhere else.

Did you know? In some places like the Gold Coast, the scribbles look different to the ones in Karawatha — they spread out like a star from a single spot!
