Jared Harris, who played Valery Legasov in the Chernobyl HBO miniseries, has been invited to the real Exclusion Zone. Also the invitation was received by Craig Mazin - the creator and screenwriter of the Chernobyl series, who was awarded by the Golden Globe in the category "Best mini-series" and other crew members.
By coincidence, a team arrived from Ukraine to cover the red carpet of the Golden Globe Ukrainian team DayNight TV with director Oles Sereditsky who lived in Prypiat at the time of the accident. The team met with Harris and presented him with a certificate from CHERNOBYL TOUR. It turned out that the actor who played one of the main roles had never visited the real Chernobyl zone yet. But gladly accepted the invitation.
Oles Seredytsky who used to live at that time in Prypiat, says that he does not remember much about the evacuation itself since he was only 6 years old. However, the mini-series Chernobyl triggered a wave of memories and emotions to Seredysky’s parents.
Craig Mazin, the creator of the show, spoke in an interview and voiced his support for the rising tourism in Pripyat. “I think as an economically developing nation tourism is a wonderful thing. If Ukraine and its people can benefit from positive and respectful tourism, that’s a wonderful thing.”
Yaroslav Yemelianenko, CEO of CHERNOBYL TOUR, is confident that in 2020 the interest in the Exclusion Zone will grow, because of series also. "We expect more than 200,000 tourists from all over the world this year. It's clear that people who plan to fly from the States, Canada or South America need time to plan such a long trip. But after the miniseries we’ve created a special tour based on the HBO story, which shows real places that were shown in the Chernobyl HBO show. And right now people from all over the world are booking tours to see the result of the successful actions of the ordinary men, who despite the silence of the Soviet Union and the insane danger were able to curb radiation and stop it from spreading. Over the past three years, a quarter of a million tourists have visited the Chernobyl Zone. Association of Chernobyl Tour Operators is trying to make Pripyat and other sites of the area a UNESCO World Heritage Site as thee had played a significant role in the lives of millions.
