NAIDOC Week 2025 marks 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. Here at the Yea Wetlands we celebrate and pay our respects to our First Nations custodians and the artists and educators who have shared their stories and culture with us.

We invite you all to visit our Centre and wetlands to explore the Badji Baanang Indigenous Garden, discover the Kayigai Trail and immerse yourself in the Daabani Biik Butganani Yanath, a self guided audio tour along Franklin Baring (Franklin Track). On this walk you will experience Taungurung language and knowledge shared by Taungurung Elder Aunty Angela ten Buuren, songs by Taun Wurrung (Taungurung) Yingath Songwoman Isobel Morphy-Walsh and four stunning sculptures designed by Taungurung artist Sammy Trist.

We are delighted to announce that the Yea Wetlands Discover Experience project is now complete! This has been a massive effort with hundreds of volunteer hours over a number of years to see this project to fruition. The $500,000 transformation of the Yea Wetlands precinct was made possible through a $375,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund combined with a $125,000 co-contribution from the YWDC Inc committee through extensive fundraising and generous support from the local community.

The project includes four stunning sculptures designed by Taungurung artist Sammy Trist, the Daabani Biik Butganani Yanath - a self-guided immersive audio tour along the Franklin Baring (Franklin Track), a new walking trail named the Kayigai Trail featuring boardwalks and viewing platforms, and a significant enhancement of the Russell Wealands Education Wing inside the Discovery Centre with new artwork and interactive displays.

The project was officially opened on Friday 23 May by Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor, Cr Damien Gallagher, with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony delivered by Aunty Angela ten Buuren and a performance from The Orbweavers and Isobel Morphy-Walsh.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved – what an amazing achievement! The YWDC is open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm, so come on in and check out these exciting new developments.
