রাজশাহী বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম প্রাচীন ও ঐতিহ্যবাহী মহানগরী। এটি উত্তরবঙ্গের সবচেয়ে বড় শহর। বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর শহর রাজশাহী এবং এটি এক‌ই সাথে বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে পরিস্কার-পরিচ্ছন্ন শহর।

রাজশাহী ছিল প্রাচীন বাংলার পুন্ড্র সাম্রাজ্যের অংশ। বিখ্যাত সেন বংশের রাজা বিজয় সেনের সময়ের রাজধানী বর্তমান রাজশাহী শহর থেকে মাত্র ৯ কিমি দূরে অবস্থিত ছিল। মধ্যযুগে বর্তমান রাজশাহী পরিচিত ছিল রামপুর বোয়ালিয়া নামে। এর সূত্র ধরে এখনও রাজশাহী শহরের একটি থানার নাম বোয়ালিয়া।
