21 February — Visit the Land That Gave Blood for Its Language

In Bangladesh, this day is observed as Martyrs’ Day, and worldwide it is recognized by UNESCO as International Mother Language Day. In 1952, young students sacrificed their lives to protect their right to speak their mother tongue—an extraordinary chapter in world history.

At dawn, thousands of people walk barefoot with flowers to the iconic Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. The atmosphere is deeply moving—filled with remembrance, pride, poetry, music, and cultural expression. It is not just a national observance; it is a living cultural experience.

Lalakhal, located in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet, is known as the 'Blue River of Bengal' for its clear blue water. This river, which originates from the Cherrapunji hills of India and enters Bangladesh, is one of the most attractive tourist destinations surrounded by mountains, tea gardens and dense green forests. Located about 35 km from Sylhet city, this place is famous for boating.

Specialities and travel information of Lalakhal:

Blue water: The color of the water of Lalakhal is mainly blue and clear, which is its unique feature.

Location: Part of the Sari River or Sari Goain River in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet district, which is adjacent to the Indian border.

How to get there: Go towards Shahi Eidgah or Jaflong Road in Sylhet city and first go to Sarighat (by lagoon or bus). From Sarighat, you can rent a boat or trawler to reach Lalakhal.

Attractions: Hilly scenery, tea gardens and boat trips on clear water.

Best time: The water is clearest and bluest at the end of the monsoon or the beginning of winter (October to April).

Lalakhal is mainly found in this blue color of its water because it is very close to the Cherrapunji hills.
