​আজ ২৯শে মে। পৃথিবীর সর্বোচ্চ শৃঙ্গ মাউন্ট এভারেস্ট (৮,৮৪৮.৮৬ মিটার) জয়ের ঐতিহাসিক দিন। আজ থেকে ঠিক ৭৩ বছর আগে, ১৯৫৩ সালের আজকের এই দিনে ইতিহাসের পাতায় এক নতুন অধ্যায় রচিত হয়েছিল। ​মানুষের অদম্য ইচ্ছা আর সাহসের কাছে মাথা নত করেছিল প্রকৃতির সবচেয়ে দুর্ভেদ্য প্রাচীর।

​শত বাধা, কনকনে ঠান্ডা আর অক্সিজেনের তীব্র সংকটকে বুড়ো আঙুল দেখিয়ে নিউজিল্যান্ডের এডমন্ড হিলারি এবং নেপালের শেরপা তেনজিং নরগে পা রেখেছিলেন পৃথিবীর সর্বোচ্চ চূড়ায়। তারা প্রমাণ করেছিলেন, মানুষের স্বপ্নের চেয়ে বড় আর কিছুই হতে পারে না।

​সকাল ১১টা ৩০ মিনিটে যখন তারা চূড়ায় পৌঁছান, তখন তারা সেখানে কোনো অহংকার নিয়ে যাননি, গিয়েছিলেন প্রকৃতির প্রতি এক বুক শ্রদ্ধা নিয়ে। চূড়ায় পৌঁছে হিলারি বরফে একটি ক্রশ পুঁতে দেন, আর তেনজিং নরগে তার বৌদ্ধধর্মের রীতি অনুযায়ী বরফে কিছুটা চকলেট ও মিষ্টি উৎসর্গ করেন।
