Clouded Leopards Spotted in Matamuhuri Reserve Forest: A Rare Wildlife Discovery in Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s rich biodiversity has once again made headlines! In a groundbreaking discovery, a pair of Clouded Leopards (Neofelis nebulosa) has been captured on camera traps in the Matamuhuri Reserve Forest, Chittagong Hill Tracts. This marks a significant milestone for wildlife conservation in the country.
A Remarkable Discovery
The discovery was made by the Creative Conservation Alliance , a team of dedicated conservationists led by Sourav Chakma. Over the past year, the team has been deploying camera traps across the Jhum landscape of the Chittagong Hill Tracts to study the presence of carnivores in the region’s agriculture-forest mosaic. The latest footage provides concrete evidence of Clouded Leopards thriving in this dynamic ecosystem.
This rare and elusive species is one of the eight wild cat species native to Bangladesh. The presence of Clouded Leopards in Matamuhuri is a testament to the area’s ecological significance and the need for continued conservation efforts.
A Biodiversity Hotspot
Matamuhuri Reserve Forest has long been known as a wildlife haven, hosting a variety of species, including:
Asian Black Bear – The largest bear species in Asia
Barking Deer (Maya Horin)
Wild Boar
Dhole (Wild Dog)
Asian Elephant
Reticulated Python (Golbahar Ajogor)
Hill Myna and Hornbill
The confirmation of Clouded Leopards adds to the growing list of extraordinary species that call this forest home.
The Importance of Conservation
This discovery is a wake-up call for conservationists, policymakers, and environmentalists to strengthen conservation efforts in Bangladesh’s protected forests. The Matamuhuri Reserve Forest is a crucial habitat that must be preserved from deforestation, illegal hunting, and habitat destruction.
The research and conservation work have been made possible with the support of Conservation Leadership Programme (), SPECIES, Bears in Mind (), and Sequoia Park Zoo (). Their contributions are helping to safeguard Bangladesh’s wildlife for future generations.
