This is where Australia paid a terrible price.

The 1st Australian Division Memorial at Pozières stands near ground captured in July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The fighting was relentless. Shellfire never stopped.

Some said Pozières was worse than Gallipoli.

Hawthorn Ridge Crater is one of the most famous mine explosions of the First World War.

On 1 July 1916, just before the Battle of the Somme began, a British mine was detonated beneath the German lines. The explosion was filmed, creating one of the most iconic pieces of footage from the war.

However, the early detonation gave German defenders time to prepare.

When the infantry attack followed, it faced strong resistance.

The crater still marks the site today, a reminder of both the scale of the explosion and the complexity of the battle.

The 1914 to 15 Star was awarded to soldiers who served in active operations between 1914 and 1915, before the war settled into static trench warfare.

It recognized those who were present in the early campaigns of the First World War, including the fighting around Ypres, and other key battlefields.

Unlike later medals, this one marks participation in a phase of the war defined by movement, uncertainty, and rapid loss.

For many, it represents the beginning of their wartime experience.

Not all heroes fought in the trenches.

On New Year’s Eve 1917, after German bombs destroyed houses in Vlamertinge, 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Ernest Wood rushed into unstable ruins to rescue trapped men, knowing the building could collapse at any moment.

Over 100 years later, his grandson returned to honour his bravery in the very village where it happened.

Some stories deserve to be remembered. A special thank you to Matthew Wood for sharing his grandfather’s remarkable story with us.

Hill 60 tells a layered story.

After fierce fighting, Australian forces built their bunker directly on top of a former German one. Instead of removing the enemy position, they sealed it beneath new concrete.

It shows how brutal and practical the war had become. There was no time to clear history away. You built over it.

Standing here, you can feel how close the front lines really were.
