Did you know that the origins of the modern stock exchange trace back to Bruges?

In the 14th century, Bruges was one of Europe’s most important trading centers. Merchants from across the continent gathered in front of the house of the Van der Beurze family to conduct business, exchange currencies, and negotiate commercial deals.

These regular meetings became known as “the Beurze,” a term that later evolved into “bourse,” the word still used today in many languages to describe a stock exchange.

Italian bankers, Hanseatic traders, and merchants from across Europe all met in Bruges, making the city a pioneering hub for international finance and commerce.
