« Profaner la mémoire n’effacera jamais l’Histoire » // (FR/EN)
À ce jour, et parce que nous sommes le lendemain de la date de la jonction du Pont de Rensiwez, survenue le 16 janvier 1945, il nous a semblé essentiel d’Agir et de Réagir.
Ce lieu, situé sur le territoire de la commune de Houffalize, dont nous sommes natifs, est un site où s’est écrite une page majeure de l’Histoire.
En effet, à de nombreuses reprises, le drapeau américain figurant sur les plaques commémoratives a été brûlé. Or, les couleurs qu’il arbore ne relèvent en rien du contexte géopolitique actuel : elles renvoient à une Histoire, à des valeurs et à des hommes qui ont combattu et donné leur vie.
C’est pourquoi, à l’initiative de Battle of the Bulge – Balade US (Lionel COLLA, déjà initiateur à titre privé de la remise en place de drapeaux, le monument ayant été quelque peu délaissé au fil du temps), en partenariat avec le 502 PIR Vellereux, avec l’appui didactique des Établissements A. COLLA (Alain COLLA) et avec l’accord de Monsieur Marc CAPRASSE, Échevin de Houffalize,
Nous avons apposé deux panneaux explicatifs face au drapeau américain, rappelant l’acte historique qui s’est déroulé en ce lieu et la date marquant la clôture de la Bataille des Ardennes, ainsi que l’explication du symbolisme du drapeau de l’Oncle Sam.
D’un point de vue protocolaire, un drapeau actuel devrait être arboré. Cependant, nous avons volontairement choisi d’y apposer un drapeau américain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en hommage aux valeurs humaines défendues et pour lesquelles on a combattu sur ce sol, face à l’idéologie nazie.
(Ceci explique notamment la présence d’un drapeau à 48 étoiles au lieu de 50.)
Ce lieu est un lieu de Mémoire.
Chaque pas posé ici rappelle le sacrifice ultime consenti pour la liberté, la dignité humaine et la paix.
Il s’agit d’un appel direct au respect de ce site, au respect des valeurs qu’il incarne, et à la nécessité de ne jamais oublier le prix payé ici pour notre liberté.

"Desecrating memory will never erase History"
To this day, and because we are the day after the date of the junction of the Rensiwez Bridge, which occurred on January 16, 1945, it seemed essential to us to Act and React.
This place, located in the territory of the municipality of Houffalize, where we were born, is a site where a major page of history was written.
Indeed, on numerous occasions, the American flag displayed on commemorative plaques has been burned. However, the colors it bears have nothing to do with the current geopolitical context: they refer to a history, to values, and to men who fought and gave their lives.
This is why, at the initiative of Battle of the Bulge – US Walk (Lionel COLLA, who had already privately initiated the reinstallation of flags, the monument having been somewhat neglected over time), in partnership with the 502nd PIR Vellereux, with the educational support of Établissements A. COLLA (Alain COLLA) and with the agreement of Mr. Marc CAPRASSE, Alderman of Houffalize,
We have placed two explanatory panels opposite the American flag, recalling the historical event that took place in this location and the date marking the end of the Battle of the Bulge, as well as explaining the symbolism of Uncle Sam's flag.
From a protocol standpoint, a current flag should be displayed. However, we have deliberately chosen to display an American flag from World War II, in homage to the human values defended and for which people fought on this soil, against N**i ideology.
(This explains, in particular, the presence of a 48-star flag instead of a 50-star one.)
This place is a place of remembrance.
Every step taken here is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made for freedom, human dignity, and peace.
It is a direct call for respect for this site, for the values it embodies, and for the necessity of never forgetting the price paid here for our freedom.
