A few memories from our tour experience over the weekend with great customers from Yorkshire and County Antrim. We visited the sites that their great grandfather would have known when serving with the Royal Field Artillery during the Great War.

As part of the wide ranging tour, we also took in the site of the Wormhoudt massacre, Mametz wood, Fricourt CWGC cemetery, Langemaark German cemetery, Tyne Cot CWGC cemetery, Thiepval memorial, Essex Farm cemetery and dugouts, Yorkshire Trench, the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, Poperinghe condemned cell and ex*****on post and the field of Agincourt.

The 'Iron harvest' of the Somme region continues to turn up many instances of unexploded ordnance every year. There are still hundreds of thousands of items of mu*****ns lying just below the surface of the soil, or above it.

Ploughing season for the local farmers is a particularly hazardous time of the year.

On this day, we remember.

The first day of the Battle of the Somme, which took place on 1 July 1916, remains the bloodiest single day in the history of the British Army. Intended as a decisive joint Allied breakthrough with the French, the opening day instead resulted in an unprecedented disaster, yielding 57,470 British casualties, including 19,240 fatalities, for a gain of just three square miles of territory.
