A week ago I visited the grave of James Sneddon in Railway Dugouts/Transport Farm cemetery, Ypres.
James was a tunneller, killed during the underground war; more than a century later, his final resting place remains a quiet reminder of the men who fought and died in the tunnels and trenches beneath this notorious piece of ground.
I had asked my group to watch the excellent film Beneath Hill 60 before our visit, featuring both James and his son Walter, who James had signed-up to protect….
Lest we forget.

Back from a wonderful tour to the Forgotten Front of 1915, with an amazing group of guests. After the hot, dry summer I was really impressed to see how well the Cemeteries were looking.

A great first two days on the Forgotten Front of 1915 with some fabulous guests.

Approaching the coastal cities of Portsmouth and Plymouth from the sea, or cruising up the Medway towards Chatham, you will inevitably notice great stone obelisks emerging along the coast.

These powerful landmarks, topped with immense stone globes, stand sentinel over the coasts and docks from which Commonwealth seafarers set sail in the World Wars.

These stone monoliths are the Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Chatham Naval Memorials: our chief sites for naval commemoration.

Elsewhere, in the heart of London, next to the iconic Tower of London and Tower Bridge, a bronze hall leading onto a quiet garden skirted by a memorial wall reveals itself: the Tower Hill Memorial, commemorating merchant seamen and fishermen who died serving the war effort in the World Wars.

I always have mixed feelings when planning the last Tour of the year. This one will be back to the Forgotten Front of 1915/16 in French Flanders, with a great bunch of returning guests.
Some exciting plans are already underway for 2027, so plenty to look forward to!

During my last couple of trips guiding groups around the Ypres Salient we have been really fortunate to have visited Jan to talk about his incredible 𝓐 𝓶𝓮𝓼𝓼𝓪𝓰𝓮 𝓲𝓷 𝓪 𝓟𝓸𝓹𝓹𝔂 project.

You would be hard pushed to find a more passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated person than Jan. The work he is doing to keep the names of the fallen alive, and to provide relatives with a truly personal and unique memento is fabulous.

Thanks for the warm welcome Jan, and for the work you did for my guests; you are an inspiration Sir.

A short but enjoyable (and hot!) opportunity to show a small group around Littlehampton War Graves and tell some of the fascinating stories of the men buried there. Thanks to my assistant 😉 for suggesting the tour, and joining me in telling some of the tales of ordinary men doing extraordinary things.
