Today Bulgaria marks the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising - the culmination of the country’s national liberation movement. The central national event is a gala concert held in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. World-renowned Bulgarian artists, soprano Krassimira Stoyanova and violinist Svetlin Roussev, perform alongside the Symphony Orchestra and Mixed Choir of the Bulgarian National Radio.

It has been 147 years since Sofia was officially declared the capital of Bulgaria. The decision was made on April 3 (March 22, old style) in 1879, when the Constituent Assembly in Veliko Tarnovo chose Sofia as the administrative center of the newly formed Principality of Bulgaria.

Blagoveshchenie: The Feast of the Annunciation

On March 25, Bulgaria celebrates the Feast of the Annunciation. This major Orthodox holiday marks the moment the Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she would give birth to Jesus Christ. Because of this, the day is deeply tied to hope, good news, and renewal.

Traditions and Names
The holiday is also a massive celebration for those with specific names. Over 17,000 people celebrate their name day, including:
• Blagoy, Blaga, Blagovest, and Blagovesta
• Evangelina, Evelina, and Vangel

Regional Names
Depending on where you are in Bulgaria, you might hear the holiday called different things that reflect the arrival of spring:
• Blagovets: A common shortened name for the feast.
• Kukuvden: Associated with the first song of the cuckoo bird.
• Half Easter: Highlighting its place within the Easter season and the awakening of nature.

Weekend Cooking class idea:
🌿 CHICKPEA BREAD – HEALTHY & GLUTEN-FREE 🌿
Looking for a nutritious, easy-to-make bread alternative? This chickpea bread is packed with protein, naturally gluten-free, and perfect for breakfast or as a savory snack! 🍞✨
🧾 Ingredients:
✔ 1⅓ cups well-drained chickpeas (about 220 g)
✔ 2 eggs
✔ 1 tbsp olive oil
✔ 1 tbsp lemon juice
✔ ½ tbsp garlic powder
✔ ½ tbsp ground coriander
✔ 2 tbsp almond flour
✔ 1 tsp baking powder
✔ Sesame seeds for topping
👩‍🍳 How to prepare:
1️⃣ Separate the egg yolks from the whites.
2️⃣ Blend the chickpeas with the yolks until smooth.
3️⃣ Add olive oil, lemon juice, and spices one by one, mixing well.
4️⃣ Whisk the egg whites into a fluffy foam and gently fold into the mixture.
5️⃣ Add almond flour and baking powder.
6️⃣ Pour into a greased baking pan (or lightly greased baking paper).
7️⃣ Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
🔥 Bake:
35–40 minutes at 180°C (356°F)
Let it cool completely before slicing.
Perfect with hummus, avocado, or just on its own 😍
