Today, Bulgaria welcomes not just the first sunrise of July — we welcome a symbol of freedom.

July Morning is one of the most unique Bulgarian traditions. Every year, on the night of June 30th and the morning of July 1st, thousands of people gather by the sea, on cliffs, beaches, rivers, mountains, and open fields to watch the sun rise together.

But this day has never been only about the sun.

It is about the Bulgarian love for freedom.
About the need to breathe, to dream, to gather with friends, to feel alive.
About a country whose people have always carried a deep, restless desire for independence — in history, in spirit, and in the heart.

Born during a time when freedom was not always easy to express, July Morning became a quiet but powerful symbol of hope, rebellion, friendship, music, and a new beginning. Inspired by the legendary song “July Morning” by Uriah Heep, the tradition grew into something deeply Bulgarian — a celebration of life under the open sky.

From the Black Sea coast to the mountains, Bulgarians meet the first July sun with music, silence, emotion, and gratitude.

Because Bulgaria loves its freedom.
And July Morning reminds us that every sunrise is a chance to begin again.

On May 24th, Bulgaria celebrates not just culture and education, but the Bulgarian alphabet itself — Cyrillic. 🇧🇬

More than 1,100 years ago, Bulgaria became the center from which Slavic literacy and culture spread to millions of people.
It was in Bulgaria, within the Preslav and Ohrid Literary Schools, that the Cyrillic alphabet was developed and began its widespread expansion.

From Bulgaria, Cyrillic later spread to:

Russia
Ukraine
Belarus
Serbia
North Macedonia
and many other nations.

Today, more than 250 million people around the world use the Cyrillic alphabet.

And when Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, Cyrillic officially became the EU’s third alphabet — after Latin and Greek.
