All code behind Stairway to Travel is now open source!

Stairway to Travel has long been a personal dream project with the aspiration of becoming a profitable business. Now, I am donating my code to the community that I have benefitted of so much in the creation of this website.

As a ceremonial goodbye I documented my journey and key learnings in the blog mentioned below. I hope that my efforts and learnings can inspire or help other aspiring entrepreneurs to achieve their goals. I hope you will learn or benefit from what I did. Please feel free to reach out in case of questions or remarks!

Hidden in these sandstone cliffs of the Gheralta Mountains are countless ancient rock-hewn churches. The monasteries are told to be constructed in the fifth century, and due to their difficult-to-reach locations, these rock churches are some of the best preserved ancient monasteries in the world. Want to visti? Prepare for steep climbs. This is only for adventurous and fit climbers! 🧗‍♀️⛰️

Founded in 1146, this ancient Cistercian abbey was abandoned in 1796. Most of the site has since fallen into ruins, making it a beautiful historical setting for events such as concerts or wedding photo shoots. A magnificant piece of Walloon heritage 😍⛪

This photo by .exile titled "Hope" on Flickr reminds us that peace is a fragile thing that must be cherished. While Donetsk is internationally recognized as a city of Ukraine, the city has been exposed to fighting since 2014. Ukrainian Armed Forces oppose Russian-backed separatists claiming the city's independence in what is called the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Inhabitants are divided between the two sides and the battle has caused many civilian casualties and destruction of some city neighborhoods. Terrible.

2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) off the African continent lies the small island of Mauritius. The coast of Blue Bay consists of excellent beaches with crystal clear waters. There is a Marine Park with rare corals and fish species at a depth of 5.5 meters. What better place is there to watch the sunrise?

New Zealand is known for it's nature wilderness. Epic, folded limestone rocks like these are a great example of just that. But aside of majestic mountains, Kaikoura is also the perfect place for enjoying the magnificent Pacific Ocean. Due to the deep-water Hikurangi Trench just off the coast, there is an abundance of sea life including seals and whales! 🐳

Tartu is the oldest town in Estionia and dates back to 1030. Today it has about 200,000 inhabitants and it is known for its charming old town surrounded by large parks. The sad thing is though, that some of these parks are located in places that were actually completely built-up neighborhoods which got destroyed in World War II...

Candles lit to celebrate the Vesak Poya, the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka's most ancient cities. It is where Buddhism began in the country as well as where the first kingdom was located. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many ruins of palaces and temples, some of which are still important pilgrimage sites. 🛕🕍

One of the greatest highlights of Namibia is the Namib Desert. The sand dunes stretch for almost 1000 km right next to the Atlantic coast and have a beautiful rust color. A great base for exploring this desert is the old German colonial city of Swakopmund. In stark contrast to the surrounding rugged environment, this town was actually designed to most closely resemble the German homeland ... 🙈🇳🇦🇩🇪
