🐟 Ganvié & The Fish Economy 🐟
Fishing is the heartbeat of Ganvié. Every day, fishermen cast their nets or check their akadja traps on Lake Nokoué. But what happens after the fish are caught?
Most of the fresh fish from Ganvié doesn’t stay in the village, it travels! 🚤✨
Canoes loaded with fish head to nearby markets in Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, So-Ava, and other towns where the demand is very high. Fish from Ganvié is famous for its freshness, and it feeds thousands of families beyond the village.
Interestingly, many outsiders believe that the people of Ganvié don’t eat meat, since fishing is their main activity.
While it’s true that fish is the staple food, people in Ganvié do eat meat occasionally, especially during ceremonies or when they travel to the mainland. But fish remains the pride and identity of the village. 🐠💙
Ganvié is more than a floating village, it’s also a floating market of life.
