JUST WOW! 27 years later a Bermuda-tagged green turtle shows up on a nesting beach in Florida.
On July 19th, 2020 volunteers doing beach surveys for the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Florida observed a robust green turtle coming onto the beach. It turned out to be a false crawl which is when a female turtle emerges from the water to nest, but just does not approve of the conditions on the beach and returns to the water without laying eggs. She may try to nest again later that night, on a different part of the beach, or she could wait until the following night for another attempt. The observant volunteers manage to record the tag number on the animal before she returns to the ocean
MM463, a green turtle, was tagged by the Bermuda Turtle Project at the Vixen, on May 27, 1993. Wow, 27 years prior to emerging on a beach in Florida to nest.
Networking with colleagues in other countries makes these exciting discoveries possible. For coordinating BTP’s receipt of tag return information for this animal we thank the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research and volunteer beach monitors Janet Hochella and Tiffany Dawson. SPECIAL THANKS TO JIM STEVENSON FOR THE AWESOME PHOTO

Great news. Great to see conservation works when done correctly.

Happy Earth Day sea turtle friends!
Bermuda has a special visitor and we wanted to share her story. A leatherback turtle named "Sara" is having an extended visit in our offshore waters. She has been to Argus and Challenger Banks, perhaps checking out all the humpback whales, and has remained in the area for several weeks. "Sara" was satellite tagged in Canada by Mike James, of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, last summer. She spent the winter far south and is now headed back north to Canada. While she was satellite-tagged off Nova Scotia, Canada, she has a nesting history in Guyana! Leatherbacks are tremendous ocean voyagers and it is not unusual to see them offshore as they make migrations past Bermuda. It is unusual for one to hang around for so long. Perhaps there is a jellyfish (food) swarm out there that caught her attention, or she is inspired by all the happy whales frolicking in the absence of the normal deluge of whale watching tours. Find your happy place in the ocean and thank you for sharing this story Mike James.

Stay safe Bermuda!
