Sun, showers, wind and noticeably cooler...
A northwesterly breeze brings a few passing showers today, with sunny breaks in between.

High pressure to our northwest holds back a developing low far to our southwest, tightening the squeeze and strengthening easterly winds through the weekend. By late Sunday, winds are expected to reach gale force with strong gusts, ahead of wetter weather moving in.

Seas become rough to very rough over the weekend and a Small Craft Warning is in effect.

Enjoy those sunny breaks.. Just make sure that the raincoat is nearby.

A trough of low pressure several hundred miles east of Bermuda is producing a broad area of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Further development is not expected as it moves north-northeast over the next day or so, into conditions less favourable for strengthening.

What's in a name.

Garrison Cemetery which is located on Grenadier Lane is 1.66-acre walled cemetery and was primarily a burial ground for yellow fever victims. It was part of the St. George's Garrison, the earliest establishment of the British Army in Bermuda.

Grenadier Lane in St George’s was named for the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, who were banished to Bermuda in 1890–91 for insubordination.Their punishment apparently became Bermuda’s entertainment: their year here was marked by lavish receptions and balls, including celebrations surrounding a visit by the future King George V.

A dark day in Bermuda’s history, remembered a century later.

Today, October 22, marks exactly 100 years since the devastating hurricane of 1926 struck Bermuda.

On October 22, 1926, the Havana–Bermuda hurricane damaged around 40% of the Island’s buildings, including Hamilton’s beautiful Colonial Opera House. Trees fell, crops were destroyed and roofs were torn away.

The greatest tragedy unfolded at sea. HMS Valerian, returning from delivering hurricane relief to the Bahamas, was caught off Bermuda and sank with most of her crew. She had been within sight of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse before heading offshore to weather the storm. The cargo ship SS Eastway also sank, bringing the combined loss of life to more than 100.

We've got rain.

Subtropical Storm Josephine continues to move away to our distant north, but a trough mixing with warm tropical air is sending a broad area of rain our way. Expect widespread rain and showers, with visibility reduced at times. Things should gradually ease towards evening, but we’ll likely get a good soaking first.

Looking ahead, strong high pressure to our northwest will block a developing area of low pressure far to our southwest. With Bermuda caught between the two, easterly winds will strengthen through the weekend, reaching gusty gale force later on Sunday.

Definitely grab your raincoat and umbrella if you're headed out this morning... It's going to be a bit of a rough start.

Subtropical Storm Josephine
Josephine is moving north-northeast at around 6 mph (9 km/h). It is expected to turn northeast and pick up speed tomorrow, then head east on Friday and into the weekend.

The forecast keeps Josephine moving away from the United States and south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland over the next couple of days.

A trough of low pressure several hundred miles east-southeast of Bermuda is producing a large area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms.

Some development is possible over the next day or two as it slowly moves north-northeast. By the weekend, stronger upper-level winds are expected to put a lid on further development.

Happiness is when a friend gives you two huge beautiful pawpaws.

Typically in Bermuda, we eat green pawpaws as a starch. Boiled or fried with a little butter, salt and pepper... Beautiful!

I decided that I was going to make a blast from the past recipe.. Pawpaw Montespan. And to find that recipe, I dug out my trusty Home Economics book.. I believe that the Montespan was one of the first things that we created along with the infamous rock cake.

Pawpaw Montespan is typically made with a light tomato sauce, but I decided that these two pawpaws were worthy of a more hearty recipe and so I switched it up a bit...

Here's my recipe if interested.
Boil two large green pawpaws, peeled, deseeded and cut into pieces, in salted water until tender. Drain well..Sautee a large onion and a huge amount of garlic in a pan and then add the hamburger. I added thyme, parsley, salt and pepper and a little more garlic just to be safe. Sauté mushrooms with garlic—of course—then add a little rosemary, salt and pepper. Stir in your milk of choice, thickening with a little cornflour or flour if needed. I went all in and used heavy cream.Spread half the cooked pawpaw in a baking dish, lightly flattening it with a potato masher to make an even layer. Add the beef mixture, then top with the remaining pawpaw. Pour the sauce over everything. Take a bag of cheese (whatever you like). We chose a three cheddar mix. Don't be cheap with the cheese.. Buy a big bag and use it all. Mix is with crunchy breadcrumbs and layer that on top. Bake at 400F for about 25 minutes.

Yes.. This is not a recipe for those faint of heart... But is sure goes down nice.

A little breathing room from the showers - and soon, the summer heat.

Low pressure to our northwest is steering most of the showers away, leaving us with largely fine weather for the next couple of days. A few scattered showers linger at first, but they’ll soon become few and far between.

The wind picks up heading into the weekend as Bermuda gets squeezed between strong high pressure to the north and developing low pressure to the south. Seas will also build from moderate to rough towards the end of the week.

And if you’re wondering whether summer has lost track of the calendar… hang in there. Just one more warm, humid day before temperatures turn noticeably cooler!

Storm Watch . October 21, 2026

A non-tropical low producing storm-force winds sits a few hundred miles off the US mid-Atlantic coast, with showers and thunderstorms mainly west and northwest of its centre.

Over the next day or two, it could briefly take on subtropical characteristics as it moves slowly north-northeast over the warm Gulf Stream and loses its associated weather fronts.

By the end of the week, it is expected to pick up speed and head northeast, away from the US East Coast, where conditions will become less favourable for further development.
