Rio’s Christ the Redeemer took nine years to build (1922–1931), stands 30 meters tall on an 8-meter pedestal atop Corcovado mountain, and weighs 635 metric tons of soapstone and reinforced concrete. It’s one of the most recognized monuments on Earth — and it directly inspired an even taller one, closer to home: Bolivia’s own Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba.

Every totora boat you ride on Lake Titicaca is built the same way it has been for centuries: bundles of reed, tightly bound with rope, shaped by hand with no nails at all. These boats are so seaworthy that boat builders from Suriqui, on the Bolivian side of the lake, helped explorer Thor Heyerdahl build Ra II — the reed ship that crossed the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Barbados in 1970.

Centuries before the Inca Empire, the Uros people built entire floating villages out of totora reeds to escape rival groups on land — and simply moved the islands when danger came close. The original San Francisco church collapsed under a massive snowfall in the early 1600s. The one standing today in La Paz's main plaza was rebuilt starting in 1743 — and its carved stone facade, blending European Baroque with Andean symbols and flowers, wasn't finished until 1790. Even the bell tower took until 1885 to complete: nearly a century and a half in the making.

Between 200 BCE and 600 CE, the Nazca civilization etched over 300 giant figures — hummingbirds, condors, spiders, monkeys — into the Peruvian desert, simply by removing dark surface rocks to reveal the lighter sand below.
