Uyuni, Bolivia 🇧🇴📍

After leaving San Pedro de Atacama & spending the night in the Ibis Hotel in Calama, we had an early start to continue our journey to country #13 of our travels.

We arrived at the bus station at 04:30am & began the dusty bus journey via Ollagüe to Uyuni, the journey took around 8hrs due to major road reconstruction works. Some of the scenery & geology on route was stunning 🚌

Uyuni city was once a prosperous railroad junction & market centre & regained its economic status through tourism after its mining hub declined ⛏️

Our accommodation was clean & comfortable but very cold, it seemed heating is not affordable & resources are tight. We watched a large protest from our hotel window & took in the main sights of the town including the Uyuni sign, the clock tower, various monuments & we read the children’s messages on the board they had created for teachers day 👨🏼‍🏫

We were really pleased to discover Tika restaurant as the food & atmosphere were fantastic & it would be our go-to over the coming days.

Bolivia felt really different to Chilé & we enjoyed experiencing the local culture, while trying to keep warm! 🥶

Alternative snaps from around The Atacama region:

1 & 2) A perfect sunny morning in Valle de la Luna after several days of strong winds. Duna Mayor, the largest sand dune in the area, in perfect condition as a result of the high winds 🌖

3) Kirsty in ‘prison’ in the salt mines of Valley de la Luna 🧂

4 & 5) Feeling very happy & relieved to find nice & welcoming accommodation. Our original hotel was far from fit for purpose so we left & found Hostal Pueblo de Tierra 🛕

6-8) Route 23 from Calama cutting through the geological formations of Valle de la Muerte. Viewpoint of Valley de la Luna from Mirador Likan-Antay.

9-11) Each sight around The Atacama has its own entry barrier where you pay an entry fee.

Views across Laguna Tebinquiche where we could see the winds picking up with dust in the sky.

Valle de la Luna was closed when we first attempted to visit due to the strong winds. We appreciated the artwork on their sign.

12-15) Driving up to El Tatio at 04:30am felt like we were driving up into space with the bright stars piercing the pitch black sky ✨

Steam rising from the geothermal vents of El Tatio at sunrise 🌋

Flamingos, Llama and Vicuña feeding on a frozen lake and grazing on the grass of the high plateaus near El Tatio 🦩

16-18) Sights around San Pedro de Atacama, Volcan Licancabur in the background 🌋

Looking through the front gate of Iglesia San Pedro de Atacama ⛪️

Entrance to Feria Artesanal San Pedro de Atacama where you can buy locally made arts & crafts.

19 & 20) Driving along The Altiplano, a high altitude plateau covered in these distinctive green tufts of grass & characterised by mountains & volcanoes including Volcan Miñiques 🌋

Stargazing in The Atacama Desert ✨🔭🌵

We were collected by at 19:00 & were driven in a small group 15 minutes out into The Atacama Desert 🌵

We were greeted with camping chairs around a fire, homemade food & wine & our fantastic guide told us stories about the relationship native South Americas have with this epic night sky 🌌

The group rotated between having long exposure pictures taken in front of the Milky Way & looking through powerful telescopes through which we saw Saturn & Jupiter! 🪐

I took my own DSLR & the friendly guides gave me tips to configure the optimal settings for capturing The Milky Way & other visible stars in the night sky. I had wanted to do this for ages & was really happy with the results - see pics 2 & 3 📸💫

The tour lasted about 2.5 hours & the guides were really friendly & knowledgable. The stars were so so clear & visible with the naked eye & the guides pointed out individual planets & constellations with their laser pointers.

Such an unforgettable experience ✨🇨🇱

Valparaiso is the second biggest city in Chilé & one of the reasons we came to visit was to see the famous bohemian, artistic streets with great views overlooking the port & Pacific Ocean.

This city is known as the jewel of the Pacific & is also home to Chilé’s legislative Congress & the headquarters of the Chilean Navy.

We start off by going straight up one of the famous 16 tiny funiculars in the city which is an experience in itself! The streets above are full of color, street art & views across the city.

We wandered around & found the best place for lunch with a view. If you’re visiting Valparaiso we highly recommend lunch at Cafe Turri, it was such a great way to soak in the views in calm surroundings.

After lunch we explored more of the bohemian area & found ourselves following a trail of ants to a very unexpected but delightful location…a sweetshop!

We finish the day in Plaza Sotomayor, this square feels worlds away from the bohemian streets above & we took in the historical architecture & monuments 🇨🇱
