Harpy Eagle Alert!

The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) stands among the most powerful raptors on Earth,
an apex predator whose survival depends on pristine, continuous forests. Among birders and nature lovers, if is often the most sought after species, a dream for most people that have ventured in the jungles of South America. Despite the huge size of these birds, the stealth and secretive behaviour of the Harpy Eagle makes them very difficult to find, even in areas that hold a healthy population of the species.
The game changes when there is an active nest of the eagles, when the chances of observing them increases a lot, but is still not guaranteed as the nest tree is usually very tall, and adult birds can spend up to 2 days away from the nest while hunting to feed the young. The access to the nest can also be challenging, often involving long walks in mudy trails through tropical forest.
The great news is that right now we have an active nest of Harpy Eagles, not far from the Northern Pantanal and just over one hour from the nearest airport, and is easily accessible. If everything goes well for these birds, the young chick should be in the nest until June or July. Located in the heart of South America, within the Upper Paraguay Basin, the Pantanal extends across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay and is recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. Shaped by seasonal flood and drought cycles and by the meeting of Cerrado and Amazon influences, the Pantanal plays a critical role in global balance by regulating water flows, storing carbon, supporting extraordinary biodiversity, and buffering climate extremes. Protecting this wetland is not only about conserving landscapes, but about safeguarding water, climate stability, and life for future generations.

[EN] Few people know that the Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse savannas on the planet and also one of the least understood. In the heart of Brazil, Chapada dos Guimarães stands as one of its greatest natural sanctuaries. Rising above the plains, the region shelters hundreds of bird species that occupy open grasslands, gallery forests, rocky cliffs, and crystal-clear springs shaped over millions of years. What was once a gold route and a land of resistance now reveals its true value in the life that moves freely across the landscape, with macaws, manakins, hawks, and antbirds turning each sunrise into a living portrait of the Cerrado. On this International Jaguar Day, our tribute goes to Ousado, a male jaguar that was injured by the wildfires that struck the Pantanal in 2020. He was rescued, treated, and released back to his land a few months later, to become one of the leading males in the region. Most importantly, he became a symbol of hope and resilience, a reminder that life always finds its way.
Now, five years later, he is older, beaten, but still fighting... long life to Ousado! 💪🏼
