The only extra immigration requirements are a negative Covid 19 test (PCR), online registration before arrival and use of the Colombian track and trace app while travelling. A handful of other Latin American countries are also allowed but Canada, Europe and Asia will have to wait a little longer.

Brazil’s colourful money is well known for its celebration of the native wildlife. We couldn’t agree more with the announcement for the animal that will grace the new 200 real note…. the fabulous maned wolf! In fact more closely related to foxes than wolves, but still neither quite one nor the other, the maned wolf is the only species of the genus Chrysocyon, and an icon for conservation efforts in Brazil. Dehouche guests can enjoy private safaris in the remote cerrado region for the chance to see this unique animal in the wild.

Hundreds of brightly coloured macaws & parrots flock daily to these exposed riverbanks to gather clay which they then eat in the surrounding trees. Peru's Western Amazon basin is the only place in the world that this behaviour has been observed in parrots. Scientists are divided as to the reasons behind the clay cravings but it is likely to be beneficial to the birds, either as a means of neutralising toxins or else of supplementing the sodium in their diet. It may also play an important social role and the chorus of squawking is testament to how much the parrots enjoy this daily meet up. One thing is sure though, this spectacular display is a once in lifetime experience for any nature lover. One of our favourite Peruvian birding lodges is just 450m from the largest known macaw clay-lick in the Amazon and visitors can also help take part in the important conservation work of the Macaw Project that is based at the same lodge.

This photo shows three different species - Blue-and-yellow, Red-and-green, and Scarlet macaws.

Travel plans have had to be put on hold for now, and rightly so, but don’t worry South America’s finest beaches will still be waiting for you, as will we at Dehouche, once the world comes through the other side. Take Fernando de Noronha, for example, an archipelago of 21 islands and a marine national park located 350km off the coast of Brazil’s northeast, famous for its wild untouched beaches, pristine air quality and crystal clear waters. Who’s currently dreaming of enjoying a caipirinha on a Brazilian beach?
