🇺🇸 A diasporic curatorial approach goes far beyond simply selecting places to visit. It is a process grounded in research, active listening, connection, and the appreciation of the histories that link Africa, Brazil, and the many territories of the African diaspora.

Each experience is carefully designed to reveal narratives, heritage, knowledge systems, and cultural expressions that highlight the profound contributions of African peoples to the formation of contemporary societies. The selection of routes, themes, local partners, and activities is guided by a commitment to authenticity, respect for local communities, and the preservation of ancestral memories.

More than visiting destinations, a diasporic curatorial approach builds bridges between past and present, between territories and people. It fosters meaningful encounters, broadens perspectives, and creates culturally relevant experiences connected to the many dimensions of the African diaspora.

Today, May 13th, marks an important date in Brazilian history: the abolition of slavery in 1888.

Within this history of resistance and struggle, powerful figures and symbols continue to shape Afro-Brazilian culture, such as the Pretos Velhos.

The Pretos Velhos represent the elders who endured slavery. They embody the strength of African ancestry and the resilience developed in the face of suffering and injustice.

Today, within Afro-diasporic spiritual traditions, they are seen as wise guides and confidants — offering patience, ancestral wisdom, protection, and the opening of paths to those seeking comfort and direction.

A salute to our elders!

May is a Month of Celebration
The date marks the Quilombos Festival in celebration of the abolition of slavery throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro. These are celebrations held by Quilombola communities from Palmares, André Rebouças, José do Patrocínio, and many others.

African Origins
Quilombos emerged during the period of slavery as spaces of resistance, resilience, and struggle. In these territories, enslaved Africans sought spaces to live in freedom and preserve their ancestral traditions, which remain deeply rooted in Afro-Brazilian culture today.

Numbers in Brazil
Based on data from the 2024 IBGE Census, Quilombolas officially represent the third largest ethnic group in Brazil for the first time.
Total Quilombola population: 1,330,186 people (0.65% of the Brazilian population).

Where Are the Quilombolas?
• 495 officially recognized Quilombola Territories in Brazil.
• 167,769 Quilombola people live within officially recognized Quilombola Territories.
• 1,672 Territories are in the process of recognition.

Traces in History
Quilombo São José, in the municipality of Valença (RJ), has 150 years of existence and is one of the largest and most important remaining Quilombola communities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The community preserves the Jongo tradition, a dance and musical expression considered one of the roots of samba, brought from Angola to the Vale do Café region.

Today
Quilombo São José hosts the traditional Abolition Celebration every May, bringing together people from all regions. One of the highlights of the festival is the famous Jongo roda, featuring songs, drums, and the active presence of Quilombola communities.

Here is a natural, fluent English version, preserving the depth and educational tone:

The Tupi language - along with its variations, such as the Língua Geral - was once widely spoken across Brazil. However, in the 18th century, its use was banned under the rule of the Marquis of Pombal.

This measure was part of a broader policy to impose Portuguese as the official language of the colony, erasing not only forms of communication, but also Indigenous knowledge systems, identities, and ways of understanding the world.

Today, Brazil is recognized as one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world. According to the 2010 census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), more than 295 Indigenous languages are still spoken across the country.

This shows that, despite centuries of attempted erasure, Indigenous languages remain alive — as powerful forms of cultural resistance, memory, and identity.

Currently, Brazil is home to around 391 distinct Indigenous peoples, each with their own languages, cosmologies, and relationships with the land.

The Tupi-Guarani linguistic family is just one among many. Referring to a single “Indigenous language” overlooks the rich diversity of peoples that shape the country.
