Saint George's Holiday

In Rio de Janeiro, Saint George's Day celebrated on April 23, is a state holiday. The date is marked by popular festivities, such as feijoadas, fireworks, and the traditional “Festa de São Jorge”.

The Tiradentes holiday, celebrated on April 21st, merges with Saint George's Day, on the 23rd, forming a long holiday, popularly known as "Feriadão" - A period much sought after by locals for short trips close to Rio.

St. George's Day is also a British holiday. However, Brazil has its own rich cultural traditions, including the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, a syncretic religion that combines elements of traditional West African religions with Catholicism.

Candomblé is practiced by many Afro-Brazilians, and white ones as well. The religion centers around the worship of Orixás, or deities, who are associated with different natural elements and have distinct personalities and traits.

One of the most important Orixás in Candomblé is Ogum, which is associated with war and metalworking. Ogum is often depicted as a warrior figure, wielding a sword or machete.

His feast day is celebrated on April 23rd, which coincides with St. George's Day. In some Candomblé communities, the celebrations for Ogum are combined with elements of St. George's Day, as the two figures share some similarities as warrior figures.

Overall, St. George's Day has a significant presence in Rio de Janeiro, the city's vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture and Candomblé religion offer their own unique celebrations and traditions to celebrate both São Jorge and Ogum.

Salve Ogum! Ogunhê!

Today, April 19th, we celebrate The Day of the Indigenous Peoples in Brazil.

This day honors the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of the indigenous peoples who have inhabited this land for thousands of years.

It is a day to recognize and appreciate the contributions and resilience of these communities, who have faced many challenges, including violence, discrimination, and loss of their land and resources.

It is also a day to reflect on the ongoing struggles that indigenous peoples face in Brazil and around the world, as they fight for their rights and the protection of their cultures and environments.

According to the 2021 Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) census, there are 896,917 indigenous people in Brazil, representing approximately 0.4% of the total population. These indigenous peoples belong to 305 different ethnic groups, each with their own unique languages, cultures, and traditions. The largest indigenous populations are found in the states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Pará.

Let us take this opportunity to listen to indigenous voices, learn from their knowledge and wisdom, and support their struggles for justice and equality.

Happy Day of the Indigenous Peoples!
