Waterfall hikes in The Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro 🍃

Nature is everywhere in Rio 🍃🌳🐒🇧🇷

It’s such a blessing to have forests and waterfalls like this right on your doorstep.

Today I woke up at 4:40am, took an Uber to Vista Chinesa for sunrise, and then gradually made my way down via the main forest road, watching a family of monkeys swing from tree to tree, listening to the birds, and passing the dedicated cyclists flying downhill after a gruelling ride up.

Along the way, there are side trails leading to viewpoints and waterfalls. Today I decided to explore Jequitibá Waterfall (Cachoeira da jequitibá) and Cave Waterfall (Cachoeira da gruta), to bathe, spend some time in nature, and enjoy the forest in the first light of the day before work.


It still blows my mind that we have rainforest inside the city. The Atlantic Forest once stretched along much of Brazil’s coastline and still reaches into Paraguay and Argentina, but it has been heavily fragmented by centuries of deforestation. Even so, it remains one of the richest and most important biodiversity hotspots on the planet.

If you’re looking to escape into nature during your short or long stay in Rio, don’t forget to visit Tijuca Forest. I offer guided hikes to peaks like Pedra da Gávea and Dois Irmãos, but sometimes it’s nice to slow down, enjoy an easier walk in nature, bathe in natural pools and waterfalls, and still have the rest of the day for work or more adventures.
