The most common boat you’ll find in the Tapajós. Used mostly by fishermen, but also used by locals to travel between communities on the river. If you ever come to Alter do Chão you’ll most likely use one of these to cross the waters between the village and Ilha do Amor (Island of love).

The South Mealy Amazon Parrot is one of the largest members of the parrot family to live in the region. Growing to over 40 centimetres in height. Also considered very intelligent, they are known to pick up quite a large vocabulary when kept in captivity. This one is called Laura and lives at the Hotel Americana in Fordlãndia. Follow (Our Photo tour leader) for more photos and information about this interesting area of the Tapajós river.

Sunrise and sunset in the Arapiuns (Not a screenshot from the Lion King! 😜). As part of our Active Photo Tours, we make sure you experience this magical area. We encourage our guests to sleep in a hammock, for at least one night, on our TEA Tours excursion boat (In order to photograph the sunset and sunrises). The Arapiuns is a river that merges into the Tapajós, just 30kms from where it meets the Amazon. It’s described as a black water river, which is a slow-moving that flows through wetlands. There are many locations to visit here, as the river narrows. Photo credit - @ Resex Tapajós Arapiuns

The pink river dolphin of the Amazon. Legend has it that on nights of a full moon, local communities would have parties. At these celebrations an unknown man would appear, wearing white clothes and white hat. Many of the locals believed him to the human form of the pink river dolphin. He would then seduce the young women and disappear into the waters of the river. 9 months later the women would give birth. This is still believed in small communities throughout the river as the young women are told to be aware of the pink dolphin. However, more likely, the truth is the men were in fact Portuguese colonial travellers, visiting the area. This belief was used to explain children that were born with whiter, pale skin. They would then say the pink river dolphin was the father. These photos were taken at the Santarém fish market on the riverfront, where the locals feed the dolphins to show visitors.
