Hwange National Park holds one of Africa's largest elephant populations, but it has no major rivers or permanent natural water source. Through the long dry season, from May to October, boreholes pump water into pans like Nyamandhlovu, keeping the park's wildlife within its boundaries instead of forcing herds to travel beyond them in search of a drink. It's water management built for conservation, not a show staged for visitors. It just happens to make for remarkable wildlife viewing too.

Sit quietly at a waterhole like Nyamandhlovu Pan in the late afternoon and watch elephant herds arrive in their hundreds, kicking up dust, jostling for space at the water's edge. Lion, painted wolf and giraffe move through in the same afternoon light, and a few hours at a Hwange pan becomes a reliable, up-close wildlife encounter in Southern Africa.

A beach with water this clear should not also come with this much history.

Zanzibar is technically part of Tanzania, but the island runs semi-autonomously and feels like its own
world. Unguja, the main island, holds Stone Town at its centre, a UNESCO World Heritage old town of narrow
alleys, carved doorways and centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trading history. Beyond Stone Town, the island
turns to beach. Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast hold some of the calmest, clearest water on the island, while
Jambiani in the south-east offers a quieter, more traditional stretch of coast. Inland, Jozani Forest is the best place to
see the endangered Red Colobus monkey, found nowhere else on Earth. Zanzibar earned its old name, the Spice
Island, honestly - clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla have been grown here for centuries, and a spice farm tour is
one of the easiest, most fragrant afternoons you can spend off the beach. June to October is the dry, cool season,
ideal for beach time, diving and exploring Stone Town without the heavier rains of the shoulder months. Where the
safari ends and the sea begins.
