There’s a little place we’d like you to get to know.
LOWER BOGUE, NORTH ELEUTHERA.
Now, here’s something many of our visitors might not realize.
That airport where you just landed? That’s Lower Bogue!
And many of the hardworking people who helped welcome you to our beautiful island call this community home.
But for us, Lower Bogue is something even more special.
It’s where our roots are planted. It’s where our family history lives. And it’s the place we call home. ❤️
Long before Glass Window Bar & Grill became a reality, there was a man named Daniel “El Karaka.”
A hardworking Bahamian father with deep roots in this community, a legacy of family and determination, and a dream that would eventually find its home beside two oceans.
But we’ll get to that part of the story in a minute.
First, we’d like to take you on a little tour.
So grab your luggage, find your rental car, and buckle up.
WELCOME TO THE LOWER BOGUE FAMILY TOUR! 🚗🌴
📍 STOP #1: THE GIFT SHOP & CAFÉ
You don’t even have to leave the airport area to find our first family connection!
Directly across the street from the airport is a wonderful little gift shop and café, owned and operated by members of our family.
Looking for authentic island souvenirs? They’ve got you covered.
Hungry after your flight? The café serves delicious food!
And let’s face it, you haven’t even started your vacation yet and we’ve already found you somewhere to eat and shop. 😂
📍 STOP #2: RUBIS GAS STATION ⛽
As you’re exiting the airport premises, you’ll find the Rubis gas station.
Another family-owned and operated business!
Need fuel? A cold drink? A few essentials before hitting the road?
This is a great place to start.
And yes, we’re only two stops into this tour and you’re probably beginning to understand just how deeply our family roots run around here. ❤️
📍 STOP #3: GUBBY & MANGOES 🐚🥭
As you travel through Lower Bogue, keep your eyes on the RIGHT side of the road.
You’re looking for Gubby & Mangoes!
Now, if you’re looking for a delicious, freshly made Bahamian conch salad, Gubby is the man you want to meet!
Fresh conch, island flavors, and a proper introduction to one of our favorite Bahamian traditions.
Trust us. Your vacation rental can wait another few minutes. 😂
📍 STOP #4: TREE’S BARBECUE 🍗🔥
Keep traveling along that same side of the road, and if you happen to be passing through on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday…
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STOP AT TREE’S BARBECUE!
Now, Tree might not technically be a member of our family…
But after you taste his barbecue, you’ll probably wish he was. 🤣
And honestly, good barbecue is as legitimate a reason for adopting somebody into the family as we’ve ever heard!
📍 STOP #5: THE LITTLE YELLOW CONVENIENCE STORE 💛
A little farther along, keep an eye out on your LEFT for the yellow convenience store.
A handy spot to grab a little something before continuing your journey.
Because there’s nothing quite like arriving at your vacation rental, opening the refrigerator, and realizing you forgot everything you intended to buy on the way. 😂
📍 STOP #6: A LITTLE PIECE OF LOWER BOGUE HISTORY ⛽❤️
Now, here’s where our tour takes a little detour into family history.
When you reach the next intersection, near the fruit stand, most visitors will turn left to continue their journey south.
But if you continue STRAIGHT instead, you’ll come across a small service station with a very special story.
This was the FIRST gas station in Lower Bogue.
It was established by our family’s grandfather, and generations later, it is STILL owned and operated by family members.
Think about that for a moment.
Long before today’s rental cars, vacation villas, and busy airport arrivals, this family was already serving the people of Lower Bogue.
And that legacy continues today.
That’s not just a gas station.
That’s generations of family history. ❤️
📍 STOP #7: BACK ON THE MAIN ROAD! 🏠🚗
Now, let’s head back to that intersection and make the LEFT turn toward Glass Window.
Keep an eye on your RIGHT.
You’ll find another family business offering a variety of household items and useful supplies for your vacation rental.
Forgot something? Need a few essentials to make your stay more comfortable?
Here’s another opportunity to shop local.
And as an added bonus, this is also the headquarters of a rental car business operated by one of our family members!
See? We really weren’t kidding about the family connections. 😂
📍 STOP #8: JOHNSON’S FOOD STORE 🛒🥬
Right next door, you’ll find Johnson’s Food Store.
You guessed it.
MORE FAMILY! ❤️
Johnson’s offers a wide variety of fresh produce, refrigerated groceries, pantry staples, and other essentials.
It’s a wonderful place to stock up before heading to your vacation rental.
And every purchase supports a local business with roots in the community.
Now, with your groceries packed, your conch salad enjoyed, your souvenirs purchased, and hopefully a little barbecue tucked away for later…
It’s time to continue down the road.
📍 FINAL STOP: GLASS WINDOW BAR & GRILL! 🌊🍹
Follow the road south, toward one of the most extraordinary places on Eleuthera.
Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea.
Where the view is breathtaking, the stories are plentiful, and there’s almost always something going on that wasn’t on the day’s original schedule. 🤣
And here, at Glass Window Bar & Grill, is where Daniel “El Karaka’s” dream is being realized.
A dream rooted in family, hard work, determination, and the community that helped shape it all.
You see, our little restaurant didn’t simply appear beside the Glass Window Bridge.
It grew from something much deeper.
Generations of people who worked, built, served their neighbors, raised their families, and called Lower Bogue home.
And that brings us to the real reason we’re sharing this story.
Every year, thousands of visitors arrive in North Eleuthera eager to discover our beautiful beaches and extraordinary scenery.
And we LOVE that.
But we also want you to discover the communities and people who make this island what it is.
The little shops.
The family businesses.
The roadside kitchens.
The people who have been here for generations, quietly building their lives and contributing to the island we all love.
So next time you land at North Eleuthera Airport, don’t just drive through Lower Bogue with your eyes fixed on the GPS.
