Here is the update for Feb 23, 2026:
Reason for Alert: This action follows widespread security operations, violent incidents, and reported road blockages, stemming from the killing of a high-ranking cartel leader by the Mexican army.
Safety Guidance: U.S. citizens in Cozumel are advised to remain in their homes, hotels, or resorts.
Travel Disruptions: While the primary violence is on the mainland, the alert covers the region, and travellers should expect potential disruptions to transportation and services, particularly for those trying to leave the island.
Actions to Take:
Avoid areas with police or military activity.
Monitor local media for updates.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts.
If you are in an emergency, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or call 911.
