Built in the mid-19th century (some records suggest the early 1800s), the jail was originally a far more imposing structure than it is today.
𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲:- It didn't just house prisoners; it was the seat of government for the entire North Abaco district.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞:- For decades, the building served as the island's Post Office and the Commissioner's Office. All official business, from mail to legal disputes, was handled within these coral-rock walls.
𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞:- Unlike its current bright pink color, the jail was originally made of bare, austere coral rock and stucco, designed to look formidable and act as a deterrent to wrongdoing in the small Loyalist settlement.

The most defining moment in the building's physical history occurred during the Great Abaco Hurricane of 1932, one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the Bahamas.
𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥: -Originally, the jail was a two-story structure. The hurricane completely obliterated the second floor, which housed the Commissioner’s office.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞:- After the storm, the ground floor was salvaged and repaired, but the upper story was never rebuilt. This resulted in the iconic stone staircase on the exterior that simply ends at the roofline, a haunting visual reminder of the 1932 disaster.
𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐉𝐚𝐢𝐥" 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲
Following the storm and the eventual movement of government offices to newer facilities, the jail transitioned into a heritage site.
𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐀𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜:- It was eventually painted a bright, whimsical pink, contrasting sharply with its grim historical purpose.
𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:- Today, visitors can walk through the small cells and see the heavy iron bars. It is famously located across from the basketball court and near the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞:- The jail stands more as a symbol of the past than a necessity of the present; Green Turtle Cay is now known for having virtually no crime, and the "Gaol" hasn't held a serious prisoner in generations."
