Bhutan to receive its first tourist next week after more than a year

After more than a year, Bhutan will receive its first tourist next week. She is an American who visited the country in 2019 as well. According to the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), there are many like her who have expressed their interest to visit Bhutan. However, they are yet to register with the council. As per a recent notification from the TCB, all incoming tourists will have to apply through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. They will have to undergo the 21-day mandatory facility quarantine and also pay the daily sustainable development fee of USD 65 for the period. Moreover, they will be required to bear the charges for quarantine and COVID tests.

Celebrating international forestry day by being responsible.

The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is the only country to have a mandate in its national constitution to maintain 60% of its land under forest coverage at all times to come. Currently, Bhutan has about 70% of its land under forest cover.

17th Ministerial Meeting of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD)

The 17th Ministerial Meeting of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue was held virtually on 21 January 2021. Foreign Minister Dr Tandi Dorji led the Bhutanese delegation to the meeting.

Lyonpo in his statement stressed the urgency of enhancing regional cooperation in sharing information and exchange of best practices to support the recovery of the tourism sector in the new normal. Lyonpo also emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among the member countries in the development and fair distribution of safe and effective vaccines and ensure their easy availability at affordable rates to help members overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting was hosted by the Republic of Turkey, the current chair of the ACD, under the theme “The New Normal and Safe and Healthy Tourism”.

The Ankara Declaration was adopted at the end of the 17th Ministerial Meeting. The Meeting also delegated the Senior Officials to finalize the Guiding Principles for the Functioning of the ACD Secretariat; initiate discussions on the ACD’s General Rules of Procedure and prepare the ACD Blueprint 2021-2030.

The Bhutan Chamber of Commerce (BCCI) also participated in the first virtual Conference of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of ACD member countries hosted by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) on 21 January 2021, as a side event of the Ministerial Meeting.

The Conference discussed avenues to improve connectivity, trade relations, cross-border harmonization, and the private sector’s role in economic recovery post-Covid pandemic. The president of BCCI, Phub Zam attended the conference.

The Asia Cooperation Dialogue was established in 2002 and has 35 member countries. Bhutan joined ACD in 2004.

Tigress spotted with three cubs after seven years

A Tigress, which was assigned BTN code - 34, was not seen since it was first spotted through the camera traps during the national Tiger survey in 2014.
Seven years on, the Tigress was seen again with three healthy cubs in Zhemgang Forest Divisional territory, one of the sites adopted for CA|TS (Conservation Assured/ Tiger Standards) assessment in the non Protected Areas (PA) of Bhutan.

The images of the Tigress and its three cubs were retrieved through the camera traps(April-Dec 2020) installed by Nature Conservation Division and Zhemgang Forest Division as part of their CA|TS work to carry out a rapid assessment of tiger, prey and habitat status.

The sighting of this family of four tigers in 2020 is an indication of a thriving Tiger population in Zhemgang.

Sharing boundary with Royal Manas National Park, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and Phrumsengla National Park, Zhemgang is an important biological corridor and tiger landscape offering greater scope of population dispersion to the adjoining PAs and Forest Divisions.

It takes two days to reach Jomolhari base camp, Jangothang from Paro, which are the most popular treks in Bhutan. With altitude differences of 2,500m and nearly 5,000m it offers a wide range of landscapes, fauna and flora. The highlight of this trek is the spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from Jomolhari Basecamp (Jangothang). Trekkers who want to avoid high passes and high altitude can choose an easier version of the Jomolhari Loop by retracing their steps from Jangothang (see days 1-3), while still having the majestic impressions of Mount Jomolhari.

The trail leads to a last settlement in the valley and drops to the Paro Chhu (River). Passing the lake of Tshophu (4,380m) you will climb up steeply to Bhonte La pass at 4,890 m, the highest point of this trek route. It takes two to three hours to reach Tshophu Twin Lake from Jangothang base camp. You can either trek towards Soi Yaksa settlement or move back to Jangothang.

The highlight of this trek is the spectacular view of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drakey while trekking towards the twin lake (Tshophu).

TASHICHHO DZONG

Tashichho Dzong has been the seat of the government since 1952 and presently houses the throne room and offices of the king, the secretariat and the ministries of home affairs and finance. Other government departments are housed in buildings nearby.

It was first constructed in 1216 A.D. by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa where Dechen Phodrang now stands above Thimphu. In 1641, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal acquired it but finding it too small, he built another one, known as the lower Dzong. The original dzong was destroyed by fire in 1771 and everything was moved to the lower dzong. The new building was later expanded several times over the years. It was damaged during an earthquake in 1897 and rebuilt in 1902. King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck had it completely renovated and enlarged over five years after he moved the capital to Thimphu in 1952 in traditional style using neither nails nor written plans.

The dzong is located close to Thimphu town, next to the banks of the Wang Chhu River. It is an impressively large structure, surrounded by well-kept lawns and beautiful gardens.
