Celebrated annually in the spiritual valley of Bumthang, the Jambay Lhakhang Drup is among Bhutanโ€™s oldest and most sacred religious festivals. The festival is held to commemorate the founding of Jambay Lhakhang, a historic 7th-century temple, and to pay tribute to Guru Rinpoche, the revered Buddhist master who played a vital role in spreading Buddhism throughout the Himalayas.

Rich in spiritual significance and cultural heritage, the festival is known for its sacred mask dances, ancient rituals, and ceremonial performances that reflect Bhutanโ€™s deep Buddhist traditions and beliefs.

Two of the festivalโ€™s most important and widely recognized ceremonies are the Me-wang (Fire Blessing Ceremony) and the extraordinary Tercham (Midnight Naked Dance).

The Me-wang is a sacred fire ritual performed for purification, blessings, and spiritual protection. Participants pass beneath ceremonial flames as a symbolic act believed to cleanse negativity, remove obstacles, and bring blessings, prosperity, and fertility.

The most remarkable and symbolic ritual of the festival is the Tercham, performed at midnight within the sacred grounds of Jambay Lhakhang. During the ceremony, sixteen masked dancers emerge from the monastery accompanied by the powerful sounds of traditional drums and cymbals. The performers appear unclothed except for masks and white coverings over their faces, symbolizing spiritual purity, fearlessness, and freedom from worldly attachment.

According to tradition, the Tercham was introduced by the great treasure revealer Terton Dorji Lingpa, based on the prophecy and teachings of Guru Rinpoche dating back to the 8th century.

The dance is deeply respected by the local community and is believed to embody the profound Buddhist teachings of awareness, wisdom, and emptiness. Witnessing the sacred performance is thought to grant spiritual merit and help individuals overcome fear, anxiety, and negative energies.

Cordyceps in Bhutan, locally known as โ€œYartsa Goenbub,โ€ is one of the rarest and most highly valued natural medicinal resources found in the high-altitude alpine meadows of the Himalayas. It grows naturally in remote regions above 3,500 meters, particularly in areas such as Lunana, Laya, Soe, and other parts of northern Bhutan.

Often referred to as โ€œHimalayan gold,โ€ cordyceps is a unique fungus that forms when a parasitic fungus infects a caterpillar and eventually emerges from the soil during the summer months. Its rarity, labor-intensive collection process, and strong demand in traditional medicine systemsโ€”especially in Chinese and Tibetan medicineโ€”make it one of the most expensive natural products in the world.

In Bhutan, cordyceps collection is not only an economic activity but also a significant source of livelihood for highland communities. The government regulates its harvesting to ensure sustainability and fair distribution among local collectors.
