Riverside Dinner in Punakha. As dusk settles over Punakha, lanterns glow along the banks of the Mo Chhu. The dzong shines gold in the fading light while the river hums its ancient song.

Over warm butter tea and a toast of ara, you savour red rice, fiery ema datshi and fresh valley greens beneath a sky filling with stars. Stories of kings and saints drift through the night air, and for one quiet evening, the valley feels like home.

Wake at Le MĂ©ridien Thimphu, with the hills framed in carved Bhutanese windows, then slip out at dawn to the Memorial Chorten, where prayer wheels hum and elders walk their circuits. From there, follow the river to Kaja Throm, the weekend market heaped with chilies, butter and incense. As the afternoon softens, climb to Buddha Dordenma, where the golden giant sits above the valley, and watch the last light settle over Thimphu. Then come home to Le Meridien Thimphu, its windows glowing against the blue dusk, for a slow dinner beneath lantern light.

At every Tsechu, monks in masks of wrathful deities and fierce animals dance to honour Guru Rinpoche and drive away negativity. On the final dawn, a giant Thongdrel is unveiled, and simply seeing it is believed to cleanse the mind.

The MICHELIN Guide awards Two Keys to hotels it rates as “an exceptional stay,” and in the Kingdom of Bhutan, two properties hold this honour.

Amankora: Five lodges across Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang, designed by the late Kerry Hill. It’s a journey through the kingdom, one valley at a time.

Gangtey Lodge: Just 12 suites above the Phobjikha Valley, with stone hearths, soaking tubs and breakfasts with a view. Visit from late October to February to see the black-necked cranes.

The drive to Gangtey takes longer than you expect — switchbacks, prayer flags, the valley opening slow as the light goes.

Inside: cedar walls, a fire already lit, a tub set against the glass facing a darkness we could feel more than see.

We didn’t turn on the main lights that first night. Just the fire, and quiet.

Six Senses Gangtey doesn’t perform Bhutan for you. It just steps back and lets the valley do the talking.
