🚦 No Traffic Lights, Yet Traffic Flows! 🇧🇹

One of the things that surprises many visitors when they arrive in Bhutan is this:

Bhutan has no traffic lights! 🚦❌

Instead, traffic in our towns and cities is managed by traffic police, whose hand signals and presence keep vehicles and pedestrians moving safely and smoothly.

These dedicated officers do much more than direct traffic, they have become a familiar and much-loved part of everyday life in Bhutan. Their discipline, patience and professionalism help keep our roads orderly, even during busy hours.

And perhaps what makes it even more special is seeing them dressed in our traditional-inspired uniforms, standing against Bhutan’s beautifully painted architecture. 🇧🇹❤️

No traffic lights. No horns competing for attention. Just hand signals, patience, discipline and a little Bhutanese way of doing things. 🙏

The 12th Tai Situpa, Pema Dönyö Nyingche, offered sacred relics for the 108 Jangchub Chortens to be built in Gelephu Mindfulness City, and presented two immensely sacred ringsel to His Majesty The King at Sarpang Dzong today. The relics, associated with Sangay Shakya Thupa and Sangay Yoelsung, are said to be over 900 years old.

Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel, Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, Gyalsem Sonam Yangden, and Tai Situ Rinpoche offered prayers at the Sarpang Dzong.

The 108 Jangchub Chortens, each 15 metres tall and spaced 108 metres apart, will be raised together by thousands of volunteers on a single, coordinated day on 1 November 2026.

A Royal Initiative of His Majesty The King, the profound spiritual project is also a reaffirmation of the power of unity in achieving even the most daunting of tasks. The project has given coordinating teams valuable experience in organising work of this scale, brought together Bhutanese who have offered funds and signed up to volunteer, and given Buddhists around the world the opportunity to accumulate merit by contributing to a dharma initiative.

Meanwhile, the seventh round of the GMC volunteer programme concluded today, with more than 3,000 volunteers having taken part in three days of work on three sites across Gelephu Mindfulness City. Volunteers were drawn from the business community, civil service, private and corporate sectors, GMC residents, armed forces, Gyalsung, Desuung, Pelsung, the monastic community, retirees, senior citizens, and Bhutanese living abroad.

In the afternoon, Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses and Tai Situ Rinpoche joined volunteers and coordinators who gathered to partake in Royal Tokha to celebrate the successful conclusion of the programme.

Did you know about the summit of Mount Jumolhari?

A mountain of legends, history, and sacred reverence. 🏔🇧🇹

On 21 May 1937, Mount Jomolhari witnessed its first successful ascent by British explorer Freddie Spencer Chapman and the legendary Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama, marking a milestone in Himalayan mountaineering.

Thirty-three years later, in April 1970, a joint Indo–Bhutan Mountaineering Expedition reached the sacred summit once again, carrying the flags of Bhutan and India as a symbol of enduring friendship. Before leaving, the climbers offered sacred treasures blessed by Bhutanese monks to honor the mountain goddess—a reflection of the deep respect Jomolhari has always inspired.

Today, the summit remains closed to climbers, preserving its spiritual significance. Yet, its breathtaking beauty can still be experienced along the iconic Jomolhari Trek, one of Bhutan’s most unforgettable adventures.

A cherished Bhutanese tradition, the offering of Tashi Khadhar symbolizes respect, gratitude, and heartfelt wishes for wellbeing and prosperity.

Born on 4 June 1990, Her Majesty continues to inspire the nation through her compassion, service, and unwavering dedication to the people of Bhutan.
