Royal Highland festival is held on 23-24th October, annually to showcase the unique culture and traditions of nomadic peoples of Bhutan.
The festival is graced by King every year adding extra highlights to the wonderful event. The festival showcases beautifully decorated animal parade of horses, yaks and Tibetan Mastiff dogs. There is a horse race and the Laya run marathon that starts by Gasa and ends at Laya festival ground that covers a distance of 15Miles/25Kms. Highlanders from all over Bhutan perform unique dances and other cultural performances highlighting the festival. There are numerous stalls set up that sells unique products and special items from each region of highlanders. It is a unique festival get together for the highlanders to promote their unique lifestyle and encourage age old ways of life for sustainable living.

Last year, in the windswept highlands of eastern Bhutan, a quiet moment turned historic.

𝐏𝐞𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐢 was crowned the Winner of the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧, a title that transcended pageantry. Draped in tradition and confidence, she became a living symbol of the Merak–Sakteng highlands—where culture is worn, not performed, and identity is passed down like inheritance.

Her victory did more than earn a crown. It announced the arrival of Rhododendron Week on the global cultural stage.

Now, as anticipation builds for the 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 —not merely as a competition, but as one of the festival’s signature events, standing tall among a constellation of music, rituals, nature, and community-led celebrations.

Some photos from Laya Gasa Trek. Trip Dates 11- 28th October,2025.
The trek is matched with Jomolhari Mountain Festival and Royal Highland Festival at Laya. I could not post the videos together with photos because the fb system denies it.

Laya Gasa Trek can be done in 12 days covering a total distance of about 217Kms/136 Miles. The trek starts at Shana (9484ft) in Paro and follows the Paro River for 3 days up tracing it’s source at the base camp of Jomolhari peak, Nyelila pass to Lingzhi village and to Chebisa. Over Gogula pass to Shamuthang. Up to Jarey La pass and through Tsherijathang, summer grazing of Takins to Robluthang. Over Shinchela pass to Limithang and finally to Laya. From Laya the trek can be ended at Gasa Hot Spring soaking in to relieve our joint pain from long trekking.

The trek follows as part of Legendary Snowman trek, the entire route for the ones doing full Snowman Trek.

Past Jomolhari Basecamp, this trek takes you over 4 high mountain passes, Shinchela (Alt.16, 800ft/5100m) being the highest pass of the trip. And goes through 5 Yak Herder’s villages called Soe,Lingzhi,Gongyul, Chebisa and Laya offering ample chances to interact with locals and learn their way of Life.

The trek Passes beneath several of High Himalayan chain of peaks including; Jomolhari (Alt:,7326m/24,035ft),Jichu Drakey (Alt; 22,500ft /6850m, Tsherim Gang (20,000ft), Gangchen Tag/Tiger Mountain (Alt:,6784m/22,260ft) and Masagang (Alt:,7194m/23,500ft).
It is one of the most beautiful trek that offers splendors of Bhutanese Himalayas and our way of life in the mountains.

It is a medium duration trek, which is not too long or short offering the real sense of quiet and peaceful trekking in Bhutan with very less trekkers mostly leaving the trail just for us.

Bhutan is organizing Global Peace Prayer from 4th -19th November,2025 with participants from around the world from Theravada, all sects of Mahayana and Varjarayana schools of Buddhism, lead by the venerable spiritual masters and spiritual lineage holders from all inclusive sects of Buddhist followers. The peace prayer is intended to bring peace and harmony to all sentient beings and people with different thoughts and beliefs; when world is full of chaos, distractions with poison and worldly sensual pleasures, war and disharmony dividing humans and harming other sentient beings around us including Mother Nature.
