ATSARA from Thimphu Tshechu (annual religious festival). Atsara are the clown figure dressed colorfully and entertain people at the Tshechu festival. According to legend, Atsara are the representatives of Dubthobs (Mahasidhas) who once roamed the universe to subdue evil thoughts by mocking at worldly things. The Dubthobs, through abusive and vulgar language, eccentric behavior and engagement of wit and tricks used their powers to uproot evil from the minds of mortals.

The Phobjikha Valley is a vast U-shaped glacial valley, also known as Gangteng Valley named after the impressive Gangteng Monastery of the Nyingma sect in central Bhutan, where the graceful black-necked cranes in Bhutan from the Tibetan Plateau visit the valley during the winter season to roost. On arrival in the Phobjikha Valley in the last week of October, the black-necked cranes circle the Gangteng Monastery three times and also repeat the process while returning to Tibet.

The broad valley with its best-known marshland in Bhutan, is popular for its scenic splendor and cultural uniqueness. The valley is rich in faunal biodiversity and has, apart from the globally threatened black-necked cranes. Within the ambit of the valley, an area of about 163 square kilometres has been declared a protected area, which is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN).

Tsechu, the colourful Mask Dance Festival of Bhutan and the Crane Festival welcoming the black-neck cranes in winter months are held every year in the precincts of the Phobjikha Valley, in the Gangten Monastery courtyard. It also has a popular 3-days trek route.

PHAJODING Monastery is one of the Buddhist monastery in Bhutan. The monastery is a 3-hour hike from the nearest road and is located above Thimphu, the capital city.

The site was founded in the 13th Century by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo (1184-1251), the Tibetan lama who spread the Drukpa Kagyu teachings of Buddhism in Bhutan and known as the ‘current of compassion’. It is one of the most sacred meditational sites in Bhutan. Most of the buildings at Phajoding however were constructed in 1748 by Gyelwa Shakya Rinchen (1710-1759).
