The Royal Highlander Festival is held every October in Laya under Gasa District in Bhutan. According to the Tourism Council of Bhutan, 'the festival aims to promote the sustainable livelihood of highlanders; showcase highlander’s innovation; and exhibit the Highlands as a Pride of Bhutan.'

LAYA, Bhutan — Prayer flags whip in the wind, flying across steep valleys and roads. Buddhist temples, stupa shrines and majestic fortresses called zhongs dot the landscape. Giant water-powered prayer wheels spin from tumbling falls. Farmers tend yaks.
